Wishing You A Blue Christmas...

The gift of love and joy to you...

A Blue Sky one, that is...

From all of us here at Blue Sky Disney, to all of you, a Merry Christmas and happy holidays.  Thank you for your support and devotion to the site.  I have always cared about Disney as a source of inspiration and solace in a world that needs every bit of positive influence that it can get.

Not everything can make the world a better place, but a smile and a warm heart are good places to start.  Walt Disney knew that.  I know that.  Maybe you do to?  I wish you a great time with friends and family as we close out the old year, and prepare for the new.  Thanks for coming, and thanks for caring.

Do good, stay safe...

Know Flakes...

Deck the halls, just not before November...

The Holidays are the best time of the year in Disneyland, but not everything goes according to plan...

No sooner had the digital ink dried on our post about the decorations for Halloween than the Suits and higher-ups in Disneyland Entertainment decided to put a halt to the theming for this year.  The plan to slowly add layers of theming to the park, particularly Buena Vista Street and Cars Land is still on, but this year, since most of the prep has gone toward Christmas, the plans were scrapped.

Apparently the minimalist plans for the front entrance and Radiator Springs were too minimalistic.  They will add more and more detail to the holiday theming, but the Suits wanted to have a bit more for the areas and not look as though they were skimping.  They actually start planning for these things almost a year ahead, and the main plans have always focused on Christmas, with much less on the Halloween decorations.

It was determined that the focus for DCA's rebranding shouldn't have anything that looks as an afterthought, so the designers are hard at work focusing on a grander, more elaborate and period themed, spooky decoration extravaganza for 2013.  Fear not, it'll be grand, but it won't be here this Halloween.

Now, with that done, the Christmas decorations over in Buena Vista Street and Cars Land as well as other areas are going to shine.  You will truly walk back into a 20's/30's Los Angeles during the winter holidays.  The way Walt would have celebrated it, had you been around to see it.  The music, decorations and characters are going to make DCA a place to be.  California Adventure was never in competition with Disneyland over the past decade during X-Mas.

This year, that will not be the case.

The garlands, lights and music when you walk down that early 20th century street way toward the beauty of the Carthay Circle Theater will take you out of the problems of the modern world and pull you into a nostalgic view of what this great city could have/would have been like at this time.  That circular area in front of Elias and Company?  That's where the new Christmas tree will go, all bright and lit up to stun guests.  Walking into Elias, you'll get the feeling you've entered an early Macy's store, complete with a display set up for that jolly old man himself.  That's right, Santa will now be located inside the main store on BVS, instead of being in that little gazebo on Paradise Pier.  It will evoke a very Macy's Christmas feel and Mr. Claus will have plenty of elves around him to greet kids young and young at heart.

Cars Land will have a toon themed Christmas that could only exist in a world populated by cars.  The theming will correspond to each character and how they celebrate this holy holiday, from Mater, to Filmore, to Lightning.  Everyone will have their own decorations.  And wait until you see how Radiator Springs musically celebrates the holiday with the entertainment offerings.  Walking down the Mother Road with the songs playing and the decorations surrounding you will be accentuated by the color theming of the Cadillac Mountain Range as it envelopes you and creates that Yuletide feel.

The rest of the park will have decorations as well, but not to the degree of these two new lands, but the plan, as was the Halloween plan, would be to add more and more detail to the other areas of the park as the years go by.  World of Color will help ring in the holidays as well, but the planners have not yet decided if a pre-show celebrating the holidays or the full out Christmas themed show that some creatives want.  But DCA will be a memorable alternative to the original park this year.

It won't be an afterthought as guests will finally have a choice for their holiday experience...

Prepping Color...

You been busted...

Those of you that have read this blog often know that I'm a huge "Prep & Landing" fan...

Well those of you that are at Disney California Adventure for World of Color this Friday will get a special treat. There will be a pre-show featuring the lovable elves, Lanny and Wayne before the actual show begins. It's only a couple minutes long, but it's still a wonderful little promotion that they've put together to push, "Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice."

Anyone that's a fan of the WDAS short will sure to love it...

Holiday Of Color...

Ho Ho Ho Two Oh...

When the holidays roll around this year, DCA may be the place to be...

Regardless of all those walls, the Christmas holiday season may offer a great reason to skip the fireworks over at Disneyland. Unless the plans change between now and October, the World of Color show that you watch in December will be filled with a lot of green and red, with sugar plum dreams to dance in your head.

They've been testing selections and musical pieces over the past couple of months for it, as well as a Halloween show. That show has been postponed till next Halloween when the park will be fully open, sans walls. It's pretty impressive, from what I've been told, but for now it appears that the Christmas/Holiday show will be the only one. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

Imagine the snow...

Christmas Around The Disney World...

Tis the time of year...

Ho, ho, ho...

Christmas and Disney seem to go hand in hand...

The Holiday season is my favorite time to go to Disneyland and I thought I'd take this chance to put up some commercials showing how the Mouse sells the "Disney" experience around each of its resorts. I've found it interesting seeing the interpretations of each park and how it relates to each culture. All are different, yet each have a similar theme that represents everyone and what we like and share in common.

First off, starting with the one for the park that started it all, Disneyland a couple years ago that's quite nice.

This one is supposed to be for all the Disney Parks worldwide, but is meant to sell you on going to California or Florida in reality. Still, it's nicely done and slick, but not personal.

Here is one that shows the fun that happens at the Tokyo Disneyland's "Christmas Fantasy" in this joyous time.

Then there is this one for the "Harborside Christmas" which I really miss at TDS.

This one for Tokyo DisneySEA shows exactly why it's the most beautiful them park in the world and Christmas only adds more depth to that statement.

And here is another one for this year's "Christmas Wishes" that shows why this park is the perfect Christmas present.

Here's one celebrating Christmas during the 25th anniversary of the resort that's nice.

Here's a nice, touching one that Hong Kong used to tie in the opening of IASWA with the holiday spirit.

This one was made for Hong Kong's "Sparkling Christmas" celebration a couple years ago.

Here's the one for HKDL the year before that as well.

And here is the commercial that Hong Kong Disneyland happens to be running for Christmas this year.

But my favorite is this one for the "Disney Enchanted Christmas" held at Disneyland Paris. It's not the slickest, but that song with those images seem to capture the true nature of the holidays for me.

It's a small world after all...

Landing Respect...

Ho, ho, ho...

Walt Disney Animation Studios has been struggling to find the success that their younger sister studio has had for the last few years...

Personally, I've liked everything they've done since Lasseter took over far better than the decade of work that came before it. I thought "Bolt" was a well crafted story and "The Princess and the Frog" was a return to classic Disney animation. Both were financial disappointments, but not huge runaway successes like the Lamp is used to having.

But if you remember, my favorite project that WDAS has done so far is the ABC special, "Prep & Landing." I think that show has all the creativity and originality that everyone was looking for when imagining what Lasseter would come up with in charge of the Hat Building. Bolt had the baggage of coming from another story and Frog was another take on the Disney Princesses. This was original and charming. And it's been a huge success. Not only was it big in the ratings, it's won a good deal of awards since it came out. And over the weekend, it won some more.

The Creative Arts Emmys were held over the weekend and the Little Christmas Special won four Emmys. Prep won for Outstanding Animated Program. It won for Outstanding Individual Achievements in Animation: Background, Art direction and Storyboard. Congratulation to all the winners, you absolutely deserve it. Now get back to working with Wayne and Lanny.

I can't wait to see those Elves again in that new short...

The reviews for "Prep & Landing" are starting to come out...

Check out Variety's review of the show. Couldn't agree more. Watch it tonight.

I'm going to be checking my Naughty/Nice list...

Santa Wants You...

This is sooooo tassle!

Here's an example of great concept art turned into posters for a coming Christmas classic...

These and many more concept sketches and artwork were shown off at the D23 panel on "Prep & Landing" all the way back in September. I wondered if they'd release them.

And now they have, on the official website for the special you can download pdf's of each of these beautiful posters. And that's not all, there are all kinds of downloadable trinkets, plus recipes! Not to mention all the behind the scenes videos and commercial parodies. Go over and check the site out; it's soooo tinsel!

Don't forget to watch this Tuesday on ABC. I'm already looking forward to the DVD/Blu-Ray. I hear they're going to fill it with a load of extras.

What a great X-Mas treat...

Landing Delayed...

It appears that the debut of "Prep & Landing" tomorrow is a casualty of President Obama's press conference...

The X-Mas special has been delayed a week and will now premiere on December 8th. Set your DVR recorders. Ok, if you miss it then, it'll be rebroadcast on December 16th as well. Of course, if you do watch it on the 8th, this just means you can see it twice in two weeks. It's a great special and I can't wait to own the DVD. Actually, I plan on buying the Blu-Ray.

Cause it is sooooo tinsel...

P&L PSA...

If you've heard me talk about ABC airing WDAS' "Prep & Landing" you know how much I enjoyed it...

Take a look at this little animated short for P&L that runs like a public Service announcement from the past. Clever and cute just like the special.

Enjoy...

Prepping Prep & Landing...

The website for Walt Disney Animation Studios' ABC Special: "Prep & Landing" has went live and added all kinds of content...

There are several preview and making of videos on the site you might like to take a look at. Feel free to enjoy all the details about this wonderful holiday special. I know I've raved about this special before, but it really is worth the hype. It's clever, sweet and beautifully animated. If only all animation on television was this good.

And just so you know, if this special does well over Christmas the Mouse may have more gifts for you over the next few years. So, now who's list are you on?

Be nice...

Odds & Ends, Bits & Pieces 2: Mickey's Bulletpoints...

With the Thanksgiving weekend upon us, I thought we would take this opportunity to just take a look at several really cool items related to Disney from around the web...

In no particular order:

Over in Japan plans are underway for the Christmas holiday events. Ever wonder what the commercials for the resort look like? Well wonder no more thanks to the brilliance of YouTube.

A NOTE:YouTube has expanded its standard window size for its videos from a 4:3 normal TV square(425x344) to a widescreen ratio(640x360). So all those new Disney videos can be released more like cinema and with greater image quality...

Here's a commercial from Tokyo DisneySEA for this Christmas.

Here's a couple of commercials under the "Have A Dream" marketing campaign for the Tokyo Disney Resort as well, here and here. As well as a normal commercial for the Resort here and one advertised for summertime here.

Oh, and if you've never seen how they advertise for the Tower of Terror over there then take a look at this commercial for it as well. BTW, if you recognize that person playing the part of Harrison Hightower III, it's Disney Imagineer, Joe Rohde who's the czar over DAK.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of the TDR, check out the official websites holiday offerings for TDL's Christmas Fantasy here and here. And some merchandise for the Christmas Fantasy here and here.

Over at Tokyo DisneySEA they're not being left out of the festivities either. Here's the official website for the Harborside Christmas. Check out this official website for decorations at TDS's Christmas celebration also.

And if you liked some of those commercials for the site there are those and several more here.

And talk about being prepared in advance... the TDR already has their Valentines day celebration website up for the upcoming "Valentine Nights". It's purty...

Moving across the ocean over to the Asian mainland we come upon Hong Kong Disneyland. Did you know that China's first Disney Resort has an official YouTube channel filled with videos? Well, now you do. Expect to hear a lot of news about HKDL next year, as well as Asia in general and China in particular...

Crossing the ocean back to sunny California were they're going to be holding the upcoming 3D Entertainment Summit from December 1-2. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group president Mark Zoradi will be one of keynote speakers recently added to the schedule. It's going to be interesting to hear what he has to say about "Twilight"...

Disneynature's trailer for "Earth" has been released on YouTube as well.

If you've ever wanted to know what John Lasseter's five favorite films are then Rotten Tomatoes will satisfy that desire.

The American/English cast for "Ponyo on the Cliff" has been announced by Ghibliworld.

Speaking of Ponyo, the director of that film, Hayao Miyazaki has an interview over at Twitchfilm.

Finally, if you love animation then you'll know who Richard Williams is... for those that don't, he's the man that orchestrated the animation on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", and he's a brilliant animator. Well, his lifetime dream was a project he worked on for twenty-plus years known as "The Thief and the Cobbler". He was eventually thrown off the project and it was reworked as "Arabian Knight" for Miramax. It came and went without much fanfare, but if you'd like to see what his cut of the film looked like then check out this little gem on Google Video. Ahhh, the wonders of the web.

Till Monday, enjoy the holiday weekend. Blue Sky Disney will return...

Christmas Comes But Once A Year, Sometimes Early...

My, how the year passes so quickly...

It seems like it was yesterday that 2008 began and now Halloween is upon us. Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here and then the beauty that is Christmas will greet us... My favorite time of the year, btw.

We've always noticed how stores tend to put X-Mas decorations and promotions out earlier and earlier each year... Well, Disney is no different. Actually, Tokyo Disney, to be specific.

The website for the Christmas events at the Tokyo Disney Resort are already up and active. If you've never been, the events are wonderfully entertaining and pure Disney, from TDL's "Christmas Fantasy" to TDS's "Harborside Christmas." And we can't forget Ikspiari's "Pure White Christmas" as well.

Also, if you're interested, the Hong Kong Disneyland website has it's Christmas Holiday Page up as well.

Christmas may come but once a year, but Disney magic around the world lets you experience it many times and in many ways...

Warning Signs...

Hey Guys,

Just a note to inform you that posting throughout this month will be lighter than normal due to the holidays and my determination to have a life outside of Disney(must find gifts, must find gifts, must find...).

Not that there won't be any... or even a small amount of postings, but there probably won't be at least one a day like there is usually. After the New Year, posts will return to normal.

Honest. What? You don't trust me? I mean it...

Scout's Honor.

Beauty Forgets To Pay Heating Bill...

The Mouse finally made official what we mentioned in a previous BSA, about the Castle being draped in snow for the Christmas season with a press release this weekend.

"New enchantment arrives in Disneyland as the holiday season finds “Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle” covered in freshly fallen snow. With its exciting new look, the Castle will serve as a shimmering centerpiece for a daytime holiday celebration, and as a snow-capped stage for the new music, lighting and special effects that will precede the legendary “Believe ... in Holiday Magic” nighttime fireworks spectacular."

And no, that pic above is not what the castle will look like...

The artwork for the castle is very beautiful and should become an instant classic that turns into an annual tradition. It's one of those things you look at and go: "why didn't we think of that before?"... this Holiday Season the Castle and the Park will get a whole lot cooler.
