Choosing A Doctor..,

Iconic characters are very delicate properties...

Casting the right actor to convey in body, mind and presence is essential to getting not only the character right, but the story as well.  Such is the case with characters that have rich histories like Doc Savage.  Although he is not as well known as Superman or Batman, he is as much of a cornerstone of Twentieth Century pop-culture.  He is not only as important albeit less known, he is the inspiration for those characters.  Parts of Superman come directly from this pulp hero (just as the Shadow has elements that went into Batman).

There are only so many actors that would be able to portray The Man of Bronze.  So I thought we'd look at a few (the few) that could play this character well, but also do justice to him.  So what does he look like?  Who is he really?  Here are several actors that Blue Sky believes would go along way toward creating a believable adaptation of one if the last century's first super heroes.

Chris Hemsworth - If you want to cast from the James Bama interpretation of the character them Hemsworth would fit the bill.  Yes, I know he is known for playing another famous pop-culture creation, but if Harrison Ford can be both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, then this actor can be both the God of Thunder and the Man of Bronze.

Armie Hammer - Another very good actor with the size (Hammer is actually taller than Hemsworth at 6'5" to Thor's 6'3") to play the character.  Hammer has shown that he can play a goodie two shoe before, let's just hope they don't make fun of the character like they did with Kimosabe.  But Black appears to understand Clark Savage Jr. and if Armie Hammer got the job he would have excellent direction.

Alexander Skarsgard - If you 're not going the James Bama route and focus in the classic 30's look then Skarsgard might fit the bill.  Maybe he doesn't display the hulking presence of those Sixties reprints, but he carries the intelligence and intensity needed to make the icon believable.

Joel Edgerton - A much lesser known actor, Edgerton would carry a smart presence reflecting the calm authority of a man trained to be a perfect man from childhood.  While not as well known as others, Shane Black may have to use some of his newfound power if he goes with a lesser name like Joel Edgerton.  But getting the right person for the role doesn't mean that this actor wouldn't make an interesting choice, and the right choice

These are by no means the only choices to play Doc Savage, but they are an example of how to cast the role.  Knowing who will play the pulp figure will give us a look into the world that Shane Black is working to create.  That world is buried in the pages of many adventures that have been going on since the early 30's.

I can't wait to visit it, and welcome it to a new century...

Hat Tip to Paul Malmont for his pulp perspectives.

Spirit Of The West...

The Man of Steel isn't the only hero coming out soon...

A Masked Man with silver bullets will be out soon as well.  The film looks to have crazy action and Gore Verbinski's twisted take on the Wild West also.  If you've seen the trailers then you've seen the scene where the Lone Ranger wakes up after being dead to find himself on a spirit tower and almost falling off.

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new featurette of the filming of that scene.  It shows you the prep that it takes to film even a shot that last only a few seconds.  But it's unique shots that make films stand out in this crowded summer of films.  Or maybe it's story that make films stand out?  Yeah, that's it: a great script.

I've been hanging around development suits too long...

Man Of U.N.C.L.E...

Well, now we know who might be taking the Solo role Tom parachuted out on...

So instead of just having the man that played secret agent Ethan Hunt taking on the part of secret agent Napoleon Solo, we'll have Kal-El play him?  That sounds interesting.  Word is the buzz surrounding "Man of Steel" is so positive among the Bunny Suits that Warner feels Henry Cavill can lead another iconic franchise.

So if this rings true then Cavil will be Solo to Armie Hammer's Russian spy Illya Kuryakin.  That will be a comely duo for Guy Ritchie to have some fun with.  Will "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." be a present day adventure, or a period-centric 60's spy pic?

We may need a secret agent to find that out...

Last American Hero...

So the Mouse released the final trailer for their new summer film...

The fourth trailer for Walt Disney Pictures "The Lone Ranger" has come out.  More action, more comedy, more "splosions" and a really wild, Wild West.  The folks in Burbank are betting 200+ million on a genre that has been hit or miss over the past few decades.

Gone are the days when Hollywood studios would crank out Westerns on a weekly basis, because it was printing money.  People would go to see them no matter if they were good, or bad, or the cowboy was singing.  It was a distinctly American genre that defined this nation during the latter part of the Nineteenth century.  It was the emergence of this nation on the world as a place of opportunity, adventure and hope.

Maybe that hope is personified in the adventures of this tale of a masked man out for justice.  He doesn't wear a cape, or fly, or throw a car at someone to smash them.  He fires a bullet, rides a white horse, and wears a white hat.  He's the symbol of a dying breed of film and men.  Cowboys are a part of the film industry and the American past.  We'll see if it rides again this summer.

Remember they said pirate movies were dead a while ago too...

Cowboys At The Superbowl...

At least this one shows more ranger...

Sadly, they didn't make it that far...

But one particular cowboy showed up.  A ranger.  A lone ranger.  Check out Walt Disney Pictures Super Bowl Spot for "The Lone Ranger" that premiered during the Big Game.  It's got a lot of action and a good amount of humor.  Especially that bit near the end.

Gore Verbinski can tell a Western.  He did it before with "Rango" a couple years ago.  So I have faith in him.  The Mouse's marketing department hopefully won't have a problem figuring out how to sell this one to an audience like they did with "John Carter" last year.  They were both Westerns after all.  One just ended up on another planet.

And the other ended up on Johnny Depp...

Pirates Of The Old West...

Hi ho, Black Pearl, and away...

And as a last surprise during Disney's panel, they had a little trailer for us...

Like a few years before when they showed a test trailer for "Tron 2," the Mouse had a gift for us. Not the official trailer for the "The Lone Ranger," but one that was specifically made for Comic Con.

And it looks typical Gore Verbinski. It's very much like what you would find in the Pirates films. It has an epic scale to it. While very little of the Lone Ranger and Tonto are shown, you do get to enter the world in which they occupy. And it's somewhere between a traditional one and a Sergio Leone western. This isn't a revisionist western, it's Disney after all.

But it does look big, and you can see with the train scenes (lots of them) that this film is going to be massive just like the Pirate films. It is to the West what that series was to the Caribbean. And Johnny Depp is playing a Tonto that is like Jack Sparrow, while Armie Hammer is Will Turner. As well, for perspective think that in this film the ships are trains and the ocean is the dusty dessert plains. And Tonto hanging from the bottom of a train. This should be fun.

Looking forward to the actual first, full trailer when it's released...
