I got time...
Let me tell you a story...
Two actually. A tale really. The tale of two, possible future worlds. One is what the vision of Suits have for this world, and the other is what Creatives want for this world. You see the see the Suits see only profit and opportunity. The Creatives see ideas as the real treasure. The trick is finding somewhere in the middle. In a balanced world, the Creatives will find a way to prove to the Suits that their vision is what is needed, and creating something just for the sake of dollar signs isn't actually good for the bottom line in the end, as it diminishes what the Founder successfully created that made his company so profitable.
Translation is, originality and thinking outside the box to give the guest what they didn't know they wanted was how Walt Disney blazed his path to create a company that is now the pinnacle of, and largest deliverer of entertainment in the world.
This tale is of the Disney World part of that world.
There is a lot going on in that Florida haven right now. Construction of the Fantasyland Expansion, the continued work on expansion of Disney's Animal Kingdom with the fantasy animal park coming to fruition with the "Avatar" land, and most importantly, the addition and bringing new life into Disney's Hollywood Studios that will happen in the next few years.
This park has been waining over the past decade+. It has lost focus on what it is and where it is going. It's in the process of trying to find what it is trying to entertain guests with, to tell who it is really. It's beginning to shake off the narrative that it is the Mouse's alternative to Universal Studios and now trying to figure out what film experience it wants to tell to everyone entering it's gate. While DAK is expanding to a full day park with the myth element (albeit, a sci-fi mythical creatures design, not a fantasy mythical creature design) of the park, DHS is now planning on moving away from being a movie "tour" park, and being a movie "experience" park.
I have great hope for Walt Disney World. With the hiring of George Kalogridis, the languishing quality of WDW will finally be addressed. The lower standards that are accepted there as the norm will hopefully, slowly be replaced by what we expect in a Disney Experience. Kalogridis is a nuts and bolts guy, so we should expect operations, and quality to be made a much more prominent focus over the next few years. If you're unhappy with what you get there, please make sure you let guest relations know so that it reaches Team Disney Orlando. It has a much better chance of getting addressed with George now in charge.
Now, back to that vision thing. Here's what the dilemma is. Right now, actually the last few months of last year and into the new year, the company has been working with the decision of what path to move forward with on the expansion of Hollywood Studios. You see everyone loves success since it's so elusive in business. In a world where profit is king, you want to replicate what works. In Burbank's case, this means clone it. Duplicate it. Copy it and hope lightning strikes twice, or even three times. Such is the case with Cars Land, which is the single most profitable creation for the parks in twenty years. The easy answer for the Suits is to clone it, the more difficult answer from the Creatives is to recreate what made it successful.
I'm sure you've read all the rumors floating around the Internet about cloning Cars Land down in Florida. How it's going to go where the old Hollywood Backlot Area is and expand the Pixar Place area of the park. This is partially true. The Pixar Place area is where Imagineers expect to create the expansion of the park that I refer to, mainly at least. But therein lies the fight.
One path is that one. To clone Cars Land and expand the Pixar Place and give it a much grander imprint in the Hollywood Studios park. The shadow of the Lamp will fall heavily on this gate if that choice is the direction they head. It'll be destined to be a hit just like out here in California. There will be no shortage of demands if the land is announced, with its immersive theming and escapist fun that literally draws you into an animated world. This would make the Studio Backlot an inviting plot of real estate to put this WDI creation. Instant hit: just add three years of construction, hundreds of millions of dollars, and in 2015 you'll have a swarm of people descend on the Florida resort for the experience we have out here.
Then there is the alternative.
Expand the Pixar Place, but not with a clone. Imagine that? Now what would/could it consist of? Well, the area as pitched would have several other Pixar character creations. This lists rings like a laundry list of the last decades hits for Disney animation via Emeryville. Nemo ideas, lots of Toy Story ideas thrown around (including several attractions out of the "Toy Story Land" areas in Paris and Hong Kong), even talk of a Ratatouille clone like the one being built at Walt Disney Studios Paris (not likely, though, but not impossible). But the new E-Ticket surrounding all of these minor C and D Ticket attractions would be something better. Something incredible even.
Yes, that pun was intentional. The proposal, which wasn't a done deal when I talked to my Bothans near the beginning of the year, would involve the Brad Bird creation. If the Mouse decides to go the non-clone route, the largest part of the expansion would be an attraction based on "The Incredibles" film.
It's not the same one that was going to go into DCA when they were scrambling for something to stop the bleeding and the laughter, but it is a project that is designed to take you into the idealized world that Bird created where Supers were very real. This one would feature cutting edge technology, with animatronics and possible 3D/4D effects that rival anything done with Cars or the new Ratatouille ride.
It's part of what Lasseter wanted with each park having its own original creations. Attractions to make you want to travel to different parks for different reasons. Imagine that? The plan was to have two or three C-Tickets, budget permitting of course, and a large E-Ticket based on this film to define the entire area as a fully immersive experience of Pixar's imaginative stories. A Pixar land so to speak. Will that happen? It's a matter of numbers, time and justification of money that comes down to a battle of Suits and Creatives trying to figure what will be best. Cloning? Or creativity? So which side will win?
We'll likely find out what the answer is to that question sometime later this year...

There And Back Again Starts Today...
One Ring to rule them all and in Orlando bind them...

Today is supposed to be the start day for "The Hobbit" film(s)...
Warner Bros. production of the classic novel that gave birth to "The Lord of the Ring" should be lensing down in New Zealand as we speak. As someone that absolutely loved the books, the films and everything else about them, I can't wait to see Part One in December of 2012.
And now, if Disney would just license the films they can capitalize on mania that will happen over the new few years by putting a nice attraction in Disney's Hollywood Studios (just as the Second Part ends, what a coincidence that would be). It might even give them a reason to move that Sorcerer's Hat.
I know the Mouse has wanted their own LOTR, but Narnia sadly, wasn't it...

Becoming Even More A Part Of The World...
A long time a... oh, just give it up, George...

With each year, Star Wars and Indiana Jones become more and more linked to the Disney name...
There are people who will argue with that, but it's true. And if you ask many kids/teens entering the park and they'd be surprised to find that Darth Vader and Yoda weren't Disney characters. Each year down in Florida, Disney's Hollywood Studios has had a Star Wars Weekends series. And each year they've come out with some clever posters/banners. Here are the 2010 versions:

And as each of these posters gets woven into guest's mental tapestry, you have to wonder when Bob Iger is going to call up George and ask him to sign the adoption papers...

Twenty One Years Of Faking Movie Magic...

Just think, as of today she can legally drink...
Michael Eisner's first attempt at a theme park emerged from the swamplands of the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The Disney-MGM Studios debuted in Walt Disney World on this day. Now known as Disney's Hollywood Studios, the park was designed as an answer to Universal Studios successful theme park back in California(and opening ahead of Universal Studios Orlando). Conceived of originally as an attraction at another park it blossomed into a full park under Eisner's plans. Both for a park and as a way of upstaging Universal and giving guests less of an incentive to leave the resort.
While the park has gotten muddled in theming over the past two decades it's still a fun park. I personally love the Great Movie Ride, the Art-Deco theming and various attractions. It's far from perfect and WDI knows this. I believe the Suits know this as well and there have been numerous plans laid out as to what to do about this. I'm not really a fan of the Pixar Place area but any plans that were going forward were put on hold with the current economic situation. Should things turn around in the next year or so we may see those plans come off the back burner.
So even as much work lies ahead, hat, cough, hat, cough. I want to wish Disney-MGM St- errr, Disney's Hollywood Studios a happy Twenty-first birthday! And if you happen to be in the park today, buy her a drink.
Continuing...
And if you'd like to see some fantastic artwork from Disney-MGM Studios then go over to Alain's great (albeit now closed) website, Disney and More and wallow in the details. The lovely, lovely details...

Before The Empire, Before The Dark Times...

With the release of these new posters it appears that STAR WARS Weekends are coming soon to a theme park near you...
Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, that is.

Clever. I always love what they do with these posters. Now if the economy settles down and we can get some nice design plans approved by Iger and the Suits things will be going swimmingly...

Up Art...

With "Up" moving ever closer to release it seems that artwork is leaking out...

Both officially and not. Over at Disney's Hollywood Studios you can catch a glimpse of some of the concept art that Pete Docter used when coming up with the characters and the story.

If this artwork has you salivating then may I suggest you pre-order "The Art of Up" because it's filled with these kinds of gorgeous images from cover to cover...

Happenstance (Part One)...

"The sky's the limit right now... We haven't had this kind of positive feeling around here in well over a decade." - A Bothan from deep inside the bowels of WDI
I thought I'd take a bit of time and go over(in summary) exactly how the Disney Empire of theme parks could/would look in a few years time...
If you're a regular reader of this blog then you'll have noticed I've mentioned a lot about 2011. "There goes that year again..." is a statement I've said in many of my updates that people have wondered about. Well, it's truthfully "2011/2012" because a lot of things won't be done when that year is done and over. But it is an important time for the Mouse and should the economy keep going some, if not most of what I say will come to pass...
Let's travel the globe, shay we? Starting in our own backyard...
America

In the place where it all started we'll find the most activity. Come 2012 the Disneyland Resort will still look much as it does today. There will be some changes that are obvious. Like the New hotel(not necessarily a Disneyland Hotel) that Disney is operating. There should be at least one other hotel under construction by then(maybe two). Downtown Disney will be almost twice as large if expansion plans have moved forward by next year. The Resort's Second Gate should look dramatically different in 2012. The small, little McPark that Eisner and Pressler put together will still have problems(which will start to be fixed in Phase 2 starting in 2013, economy upholding), but for the most part it's going to be a much more "Disney" experience. As everything keeps changing, one thing that has bothered Disney Fans all along will finally go down in 2011... Malibooomer. That's right, it's not leaving next year as some have thought. It's going to be one of the last things removed before construction finishes on this phase of the resort.
The new theming and attractions, particularly "The Little Mermaid" should be bringing them in creating long, long lines(the center room in Mermaid is almost as big as the entire Golden Dreams building!). But in 2012, when the Cars Land(please change that name!)opens up this park is going to see crowds like it has never, ever had. It will truly make this park a destination of its own. The fact that it's 20% of the park when it opens up alone will create a dramatic difference for those entering the gates. Most who showed up on DCA's opening day will find most of the park unrecognizable. All who show up will find everything more enjoyable.
The park that started it all should see the Star Tours update done in time for the anniversary in 2010, while plans for a remake of Tomorrowland won't be done by then, the plans should have already begun to be completed by the 2012 time frame. Another E-Ticket is in line to be built by then, but hasn't gotten to an approval phase so I don't know which ideas will make it through the Blue Sky phase yet. Rest assured, what is proposed will dazzle Disney Fans/Geeks far more than anything proposed during Pressler's tenure.
Once all this is done and the Resort is firing on all cylinders then, and only then, will the embryonic focus on a Third Gate move forward.

Across the country in that humid jungle known as Florida, the Walt Disney Resort will look somewhat different as well, just not as dramatic.
In the Magic Kingdom, work on the renovation of Fantasyland will have been completed. Should all the proposals get approved the area will look quite different from today. At the very least the addition of the Little Mermaid ride will have visitors to WDW experiencing something they haven't seen before and giving this park the most amount of new attractions it's had since opening in 1971.
Epcot will be receiving at least one new E-Ticket by 2012, but my Bothans say that the choice hasn't been finalized yet and we may see a couple smaller tickets as well. There are proposals to add at least one new Pavilions by this time should attendance at the parks continue to remain at current levels.
The park getting the most love and attention, of course will be Disney's Hollywood Studios. Although the amount of money is a little more than half of what DCA is getting it will be put to use giving this park a more definite theming change than any other. Gone will be the Studio Tram Tour(it leaves by 2010), and in its place will be an expanded "Monstrously Big" Pixar Place. The park should have it's own updated version of Disneyland's Star Tours revision up and running by then. There is at least one new E-Ticket that's slated for construction and several smaller attractions. An update is planned for the Great Movie Ride and at this time there is the possibility of a new E-Ticket based on a very big film to combat Universal's opening of Harry Potter. You didn't think they were sitting around twiddling their thumbs, did you? Alas, no news yet as to if/when they will remove the Hat from in front of the GMR. Not that I hate the hat, I hate the placement... it blocks view of the parks one true weenie. Here's hoping it gets moved by then to a, uhm.... more appropriate(new) location.
By 2012, Disney's Animal Kingdom should have the area for that the Pocahontas show replaced up and running, delighting many a fan with the new theming that's been put around this new attraction. Hopefully, by then plans will have gone forward with moving the Lion King show where it really belongs: Africa. There is supposed to be one new E-Ticket in addition to this and talk of a new land to buttress the current Asia and Africa is well, progressing...
All those rumors you've heard about a Fifth Gate are True. While I don't think this strategy would work at Disneyland, it should do well here where there are many more international travellers willing to fork over that kind of cash. When Disney's Jungle Trek(a name I don't like, btw) opens it will cater to a more discriminating clientele(read: loaded). Almost like a luxury extension of DAK, it will offer fans of this wild kingdom a little closer look at the uhm... well, wild.
Europe

Across the pond, Disney's European Kingdom will be experiencing a much needed growth as well. After the upswing in attendance and growth from the fifteenth anniversary of Disneyland Paris, things have never been brighter.
The original European Mouse park, Disneyland Paris is scheduled to receive it's own additions by 11/12 and it shows that the "If you build it, they will come" principle works. The Paris resort has had a great year and the additions to the WDS have really helped that. Four years from now we may no longer be talking about this park losing money, it may actually turn a profit for a change. I know that's a funny thing to say, isn't it? But people are asking about Disneyland Paris and when/if it will get a new attraction...
There are several proposals right now and it appears that there will be at least one D-Ticket or possibly an E-Ticket by the time it celebrates the twentieth anniversary. I know that many people are focused on getting a version of the Indiana Jones ride, but my Bothans don't see that happening(not impossible, just improbable). If it does wind up being Indy there's going to have to be a redressing of the Indiana Jones roller coaster as WDI and park management have no desire to have two attractions in one park focusing on the same theme. The most probable ticket would be in the expansion of Fantasyland with a certain clone of a clone that I'm selfishly against(remember?)... Should the good times keep rolling expect the E-Ticket to get the nod. There are several projects in the Blue Sky phase and nothing is permanent so we won't know for another year or so what they'll approve... so your "Guest" is as good as mine...
Most of the focus on the resort will be Paris' Second Gate because it is the Walt Disney Company's weakest park. Most of what we see over the next few years will be on bringing this park closer to the detail of Disneyland Paris. This is a hard problem since the DLP park is so rich in detail compared to its ugly sister park. WDI has several attractions planned for WDS, with at least two C/D Tickets definitely planned for the next few year and one really nice E-Ticket(possibly another).
The one ride I can tell you that the park is getting for sure is the one that's been most discussed. The "Ratatouille" attraction is coming. It's going to be a very nice ticket, with technology similar to the "Pooh's Huny Hunt" attraction's "trackless" vehicles in Tokyo. Guest will be involved in a chase right out of the film... many have talked about this being a clone of the Crush Coaster, but the attraction will not involve drops so much as it will twists and turns. And it will be a highly detailed attraction(The beautiful queue alone will be amazingly cool!), which used to be a rare thing to say about a Disney attraction in the late 90's, but will become common over the next four years. As well as this there is talk of expanding the Pixarification throughout the park, specifically an area of the park devoted exclusively to the Lamp's creations. I know this will please many of you that complain about that in the domestic parks, but you have to remember Pixar is now a part of Disney and it will reflect so in the attractions we see at the parks both here and abroad.
By the time we see the twentieth anniversary of this park comes around the complaints we have about the Paris Resort will be mostly answered... mostly.
Later this week I'll have part two of this report focusing on Asia. It's an interesting time for the Mouse and its world... Stay tuned.
The Boulder Debuts...

On this day, nineteen years ago "The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" attraction opened at the Disney-MGM Studios(now Disney's Hollywood Studios) in WDW. It appeared before the Indy ride in Disneyland and along with Star Tours was the beginning of Lucasfilm's long and continuing involvement with the Mouse.

Saving Face, Propping Up...

Before the Suits in Burbank finally began to realize the mistakes in conceiving Disney's California Adventure, the mantra was
"Well, we'll just keep adding attractions and that will be enough.".
It wasn't, but it's hard to get bean counters to admit they're not Imagineers, much less Walt himself...
On this day...
Four years ago today, the clone of Disney's Hollywood Studios "Twilight Zone Tower of Terror" made it's official debut. While somewhat different architecturally, the basics of the ride are actually the same. The placement of it near the end of the Hollywood Backlot section of the park is somewhat awkward due to flawed designs. Designs that will hopefully be fixed in the second phase of DCA's "Extreme Makeover" with a more period themed and expanded area surrounding the attraction. While there was a boost in park attendance, it wasn't what the Mouse wanted/intended and wasn't the much needed "E-Ticket" that would become the savior of the park. But it was at least a new ride and a much better one that "Superstar Limo".
Hopefully, the mistakes of the past will not be forgotten and will not be repeated...

Disney's "MGM" Hollywood Studios Opens...

On this day...
Nineteen years ago, Walt DIsney World opens it's third park, "Disney-MGM Studios". This is the fifth theme park for the Walt Disney Company.
The Studio opened without certain rides, was smaller than it now is and was originally intended to be an actual working studio(which it's not anymore, btw). But Eisner's new park actually is a big success for the company; further emboldening him to expand the Disney theme park empire... plans proceed for his great European version of of a Mouse kingdom known as "Euro Disneyland"... and the results would have the CEO start to lose his yearning for massive, detailed expansions, but I digress. Another story. Another time. Many a tale has been written about that already... both here, other websites and those mysterious and often unread things known as books. Hmmm.
D-MGM's opening upset Universal Studios, which was planning on launching it's Florida satellite studio the following year. They felt Eisner had upstaged them(which he had). The CEO beat them to the punch and helped establish more of the Hollywood presence in Orlando for the company.
It wouldn't be until Tower Of Terror opened up that it reached it's full potential...
Sadly, under Pressler and Eisner afterwards it's turned into a mishmash of concepts that have diluted the freshness of what it was originally intended to be.
There's a lot of rumbling in the walls of WDI right now as plans move forward for a new "Makeover" of the newly rechristened "Disney's Hollywood Studios"... if plans go forward the concept of the park will be refocused again. Hopefully this time for the better, under more capable hands than those in the latter 90's.
Interesting times lie ahead the next four years.

Say Goodbye To The Block...

If you haven't seen Block Party Bash before, or in a while you might want to go to DCA to have one last look...
Sunday is it's last day before it heads out to Florida to become the main parade at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
See it while you can, the new "Pixar Pals" parade will be starting at DCA in March.

What Sign Are You? Not A Leo, Apparently...

The Walt Disney Company released the artwork for the new logo of "Disney's Hollywood Studios" Park in Florida today. Notice that it says "Studios" not "Studio". Personally, I think it's rather understated and filled with a styling that is reminiscent of Hollywood's past... so I guess you could say I like it. It will go well with the upcoming changes to the park. 2008 will be a transitional year and 2009... well, hopefully those Imagineers get their projects approved soon. 2009 could be a kicker of a year.
The new logo is a good start...

Blue Sky Alert-America (Orlando): Special Forces...

Much has happened since our last update on the little property in Florida that Disney owns. As I've said in an earlier post, WDW moves at a pace of about 18-24 months behind it's older sister in Anaheim... and while not as much is happening in Orlando there is a great deal of activity happening.
The situation at the Resort is more fluid than it is at Disneyland as Tom Fitzgerald and the Imagineers under his charge have still yet to finalize some of their plans. Even though Uncle John's main focus is the original park, he is watching what Fitzgerald is doing and making suggestions as to where he'd like them to go. Tom and company tend to know where their bread is buttered and are taking many suggestions as orders... not suggestions. This could turn out to be a good thing in a few years. There is much planning going on right now and we won't really get to see the results until January of 2008. Over the next three to four years there are plans to dust off some of the theme parks assets and fully use them without adding anymore gaudy(cough, wand, cough...) decorations.

THE MAGIC RETURNS...
The original park in Walt Disney World has a few plans prepared for it. While the Monster's Inc. Laugh Factory hasn't been the blazing hit everyone expected it to be(thanks, Tom)... it hasn't dimmed the Imagineers ideas when it comes to proposing new rides based on Pixar films. There is at least one proposal for a Pixar ride, most likely a "D" ticket attraction that is making it's way through the halls of WDI. There are plans over the next three years to have at least one new "E" ticket ride... possibly two if things go right. This all depends on how much progress is made getting those hotel rooms filled of course.
There are plans involving a new parade show as well, but it's in the early phase and won't be seen for some while now. Some Imagineers have been complaining about the general upkeep of certain areas of the park in the hope that Lasseter will make more suggestions to Tom about the overall comparison of quality between Anaheim and Orlando's attractions. It's not known yet if all the tugging on Uncle John's ear will wield early results, but he should be paying more attention to the parks as Tony Baxter and Bob Weiss takes over much of the control of Disneyland/DCA. While he will be active in the planning of the DL Resort it will free up more of his time next year so he can concentrate a little more on Disney's other parks.

FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION...
There are plans in place to have everyones favorite purple dragon make a return engagement. Several proposed plans include bringing back a new version of his old attraction... parts of the old show along with new enhancements have been proposed. Several Imagineers are hoping this plan gets signed off quickly so work can begin.
Many people are overjoyed at the removal of the wand. This is just a small sign of what will come over the next couple years as we see Spaceship Earth have a much needed makeover completed by the beginning of the new year. Some of the tacky tarps that are supposed to provide shade are scheduled for removal... not all are supposed to go, but the plans are still not final. There is clearly a plan that involves taking Epcot and removing some of the mistakes of the 90's.
The story of Epcot over the next few years is one of renewal more than anything else. There are proposals in the blue sky phase of course. Two prominent ones that WDI are working on are making their way through the process... we can expect to see at least one new E-Ticket by the end of the decade at Epcot, with a modest D-Ticket possible depending on funding next year.
A small faction within the walls of the Glendale Kingdom still wants to do something about the eyesores that exist around World Showcase. While it would be nice to see something done so that the Dolphin and Swan are not seen, it'll be a while before this is dealt with since it's much hard to hide. The Canadian pavilion is where some Imagineers want to focus by bringing out the old plans for a Canadian Rockies structure behind it to cover the Soarin' building and add a water ride like DCA's Grizzly River Rampage. It's unknown yet if they've been able to tug on the ear of Uncle John on this matter though, as he has a full plate. Time will tell...

NO KINGDOM IN SIGHT...
Sadly, I've heard no rumors of Beastly Kingdom returning. If WDI plans on bringing this dream project for Disney Geeks back, it's being held close to the vest, which wouldn't be a surprise given all the tight security these days with voluminous non-disclosure agreements being signed just to go to the bathroom... I'm kidding about that, but just barely. The good news is there is a proposed attraction being designed for DAK, it's not known yet if it is a D or E-Ticket, but my Bothans say it's a great addition to the park. Don't expect to see this for at least a couple of years though...
Right around the time that the new night-time show appears. That's right, I said night-time show. But it won't appear before fall 2008/summer 2009... by then there will hopefully be enough activities to keep people in the park past the sunlight. DAK's "Rivers of Light" is a show that has been being worked on concurrently with DCA's "Disney's World of Color" show. Both should appear around the same time unless some scheduling delay happens.
By 2009, DAK should have a couple new restaurants(one of which is being built now), a night-time water show, the new DAK-DVC units and a new ride either done or in the final stages of construction. Joe Rodhe is working hard to deliver a full day experience by the end of the decade and will most likely make it. Now, if he'll just tug on Uncle John's ear about Beastly Kingdom...

RETCHED HIVE OF SCUM AND VILLAINY...
Disney's Hollywood Studio, or as it was going to be called literally up until the week before the announcement, Disney-Pixar Studios is the park that has the most in store for it over the next four years. By the beginning of the next decade this park will be the one that looks the most different. Not as much as DCA will look to us in California... but much different than it does today.
As far as the question everyone asks about... will the hat go away? There's a growing presence in WDI that would like to see this happen... the higher-ups have made no decision yet. But the talk is going in the right direction.
Now DHS will not be getting 1.2 billion dollars to spend, but it will be getting a much healthier share than the other three parks. The decision to go with the new name over the Pixar name has everything to do with focusing the park on movies in particular and Hollywood in general... the Pixar brand, while a gold standard in animation caused too much confusion with visitors and it was decided to avoid this entirely with a different name.
We will see the Pixar area of the park start to have more attractions/activities over the rest of the decade. There are proposals to liven up the area as well as various other sections with a renewed focus on theming. Some of the drab areas will get a much needed spruce-up by 2010.
There are plans in the works for one new E-Ticket, in addition to "Toy Story Mania" and at least another C and D-Ticket by the beginning of the next decade. The focus on Hollywood will be emphasized much more, at least in the blue sky plans that are currently heading along, gathering steam.

The other big news, mentioned here a couple months ago and also bandied about the web lately is the new coziness that the Walt Disney Company has with George Lucas. There will be a big expansion of the Lucas properties at both DHL and Disneyland(more on that in a later report). This focus will include Star Wars(Movies), Indiana Jones and the new Clone Wars/Star Wars television shows if Bob Iger has his way. While Eisner ruffled the feathers of just about everyone from Lucas, Spielberg, Jobs, etc., it appears that Iger is doing a great deal of damage control. After making friends with Jobs and buying Pixar, it appears one of Bob's main goals is to bring Lucas back into the fold of Disney. Does this mean buying Lusasfilm? No, not really... although that would be an interesting acquisition for the Mouse to make in the future. Top Lucasfilm execs have said they wouldn't rule out taking the company public in the future. This happening would cause many entertainment companies to drool at the opportunity to own a piece of the force. But at this point, George isn't quite ready to do that. What he is ready to do is work with Disney, which he's always had a great fondness for. As well as a much more detailed Star Tours ride, new Indiana Jones events to correspond with the new film next year and a few things that will involve Indy later in 2008... Iger is also asking Lucas to help in other areas that don't have to do with Vader or Jones. There is talk that the folks at WDI are excited about getting Lucas' input on another, top-secret E=Ticket... one that is in the early stages and could make its debut at the start of the next decade. Uncle John is also involved in this as he recognizes the value and potential of George Lucas.
And you know what?
George is friends with this guy named Steven. He hasn't really worked for Disney since his tiff with Eisner. Could it be that Bob and Uncle John may want George help bridge the gap and smooth the feathers with Steven now that Eisner is gone? So this new friendship could turn out to be a two-for-one thing. And DHS could be the first of many Disney theme parks to benefit from this.
Remember, in Hollywood it's all about relationships... Eisner forgot that. He let his ego blind him and the company and the parks really suffered because of it. Not anymore.
Well, that's all I could get out of my Bothans for Florida... at least all I can tell you without getting them thrown over into the dark side. Stay tuned for more updates soon.

The Beginning Of The End... Or The End Of The Beginning?

Well, it's finally official...
Disney-MGM Studios is no more.

Disney's Hollywood Studios is now the new name.
Long live Disney-MGM.
The name change has been expected for some time now. Most thought that it would be the "Disney-Pixar" name, others thought it would be Disney Studios.
Both were wrong.
I remember a couple e-mails exuding happiness when it was announced that there was going to be no name change, a couple months ago. I remarked that sooner or later a name change was coming and most likely to be announced by October. Well, Disney beat that announcement by a couple months.
Come January 2008 the park will have a new name.
But this isn't the only change... and I'm not talking about the additions that Meg Crofton mentioned today. Most of what she mentioned was already known by most everyone anyway.
Over the next few years the MGM... errr, got to get used to the new acronym. Over the next few years DHS will be getting a re-branding, not just in name but appearance. Now, this won't be on a level with DCA, but there will be more focus on giving the park a unique identity.
A Hollywood identity that's been sorely lacking for most of the past decade.
