The Pixar Plan...

Calling Docter Pete, calling Docter Pete...

The Lamp has scheduled it's next animated film...

And for all those out there that are screaming about too many sequels, it's an original story. As per their Modus Operandi, the gang up in Emeryville have been very cryptic. No plot details and no information on who is directing or writing it, only the release date: November 27, 2013.

From what I've heard, it's likely the next animated feature from Pete Docter since he's not helming the sequel/prequel to his "Monsters Inc." film. It probably won't be too long before we'll be hearing about the next release of the Mouse's other animation house in Burbank. The one that's coming in 2014.

It'll be interesting to see when that happens...

Monsters Inc 2 Official...

Told Ja!

What we reported exclusively way back in February of 2009 has been made official...

At Rich Ross' press event it was announced that Monsters Inc. 2 will be out Nov. 16, 2012. And some guy named Docter, Crystal and Goodman are involved. Who'd a thought that?

Now the Hollywood Reporter and all the rest can scoop that too...

Docter's Rx...

Pete Docter and Bob Peterson are making the rounds doing interviews for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Pixar's "Up" and "Monster's Inc." with one little comment is making waves...

Latino Review
has a good interview with the director and co-director of the Lamp's latest. It's a good read, but the thing that's got some people excited/upset/mildly interested is in an interview Docter gave New York Magazine.

In that interview he mentions he's working on a new project that'll be out in 2013-2014 and that it's not "Monsters Inc. 2." Some people are upset about this, but you really shouldn't be. He didn't say that we wouldn't be seeing Sully and Mike again. He just said it wasn't the next thing he was working on. Believe it or not there are many projects in various states of development at Pixar that aren't anywhere ready to be announced. Docter's is just one of them. There are a couple surprising projects that I'd guess the Lamp would be announcing hopefully next year, but Pixar is notoriously guarded about its projects. It's actually surprising that people didn't think Docter would have another non-Monsters Inc. project brewing.

Now as for Monsters Inc., I haven't heard from my Bothans that were in the know on this project in a couple months, but I do know that as of the end of summer M2 was still in very active development. It could have been shut down since then, but I don't think so and will remain optimistic until we get an actual denial from John Lasseter and Co. But there's one question that people aren't asking. One question that's dangling from my proverbial imagination. What's Bob Peterson doing next?

Monsters 3D 2...

With the successful re release of "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" this weekend, some preliminary plans may be going forward for another special opening...

In 2011, "Monsters Inc." will be celebrating its tenth anniversary. There is some early talk right now among Suits in Burbank and Creatives in Emeryville of another limited release of this Pixar classic. If all goes according to plan, we should see another two week release of the original Pete Docter film in 3D and maybe another surprise with it; if it hasn't been announce already by then. This limited launch will prove the perfect opportunity for those that have never seen it on the big screen and those who haven't seen it at all.

Mike and Sully may be quite busy in a few years...

The Experts That Aren't...

All those Wall Street experts that were worrying about the potential of Pixar's latest film have been very quite lately...

As of today, the Lamp's tenth film, "Up" is officially the highest grossing film of 2009. And many of the same naysayers were wondering if kids would go and see this film about an old man, much less buy merchandise related to it.

I wonder how long Pixar will wait for an apology? I don't think Lasseter and crew are really even caring about what's being said. Other than by the film goers themselves. The critics liking the film was icing on the cake and the critics that were worried about the appeal of this film, well? They're toast, after having their lunch handed to them. Enough of the food metaphors, but you get the point.

Now, let's hope the critics did too...

UPDATE:
The only downside of this is that as of next week, the incomprehensible mass of action minus a story known as "Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen" will overtake it. Another feather in Michael Bay's "whoneedsaplot" cap.

A Perfect Ten...

Well, the Lamp has done it again...

Now, this really won't be a review of "Up" though I will share my thoughts and feelings about it. I want to address the success of Pixar in general and use Up as representation of that success since it's the latest example of what comes out of Emeryville.

As for Pete Doctor's new film, I can only say that it's another phenomenal achievement for John Lasseter and his crew. Pete Docter as one of the original Pixar animators goes for the outfield with his second at bat and he hits the sweet spot on the leather. Ok, for those of you that don't understand baseball metaphors let's just say I liked it. I liked it a lot. More than his first film, "Monsters Inc." even. As with all films produced under the Pixar banner, it's a film filled with great, approachable characters that you feel for in situations that make you wonder how they did it. These guys seem to take the strangest ideas that anyone else would turn into a flaming ball of mediocrity and create a jewel of entertainment. In fact, if George Lucas was going to make an adventure featuring an old explorer going to South America for adventure like he attempted to do with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," then this is what it should have been. There was more heart in this than that soulless, by the numbers stab at bringing back the magic of my favorite film character. Up is a film that shows us what you can do when you focus on story first.

But then again, that's what every Pixar film does. That is why they've been so successful over the last fourteen years. Ten films in that period and each of them a box office and critical success. Some more than others, but each and every one of them better than almost everything else out there, animated or live-action. I don't know of another studio with such a long, winning streak. Granted, they don't produce four or five or more films a year. They only make one a year (with 2011 being the exception that we get two), but each one has been a hit and many people are wondering what will be the first one to fail? When will we get a box office bomb from them? Or at the least, a disappointment. Well, I don't think 2010 with "Toy Story 3" will be it. And 2011 with the "Cars 2" sequel and the ever growing fan base of young boys it gathers will be it either. Maybe it'll be the Christmas release of "The Bear and the Bow" which will take the traditional Disney animated spot? Or 2012 with Gary Rydstrom's "Newt" film? Of those two I can't say, but if "Monsters Inc. 2" makes it in 2012, which is still tentative, I can guarantee that won't be that one.

Pixar is on a roll. Rolls end, but for now it's one great winning streak that you have to applaud. Succeeding in Hollywood is extremely difficult, succeeding as well as they have is almost next to impossible. Many are hoping that that magical pixie dust rubs off on its owner. Walt Disney Animation Studios took a step in the right direction last year with "Bolt" as Lasseter's first fully influenced film under his management. This year with "The Princess and the Frog" it moves out front and center to see if he's going to be able to not only continue, but expand his winning streak. And then "Rapunzel" next year and 2012's "King of the Elves" sweetens the gamble even more. It could impossible, but having ten films in a row like this could've been said to be impossible as well. At least before Pixar came around.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go plan for an adventure I've been putting off for quite some time...

Doctor Is Making The Rounds...

Pete Docter is out doing interviews for Pixar's "Up" and he's been a busy boy. He's chatted recently with the San Francisco Chronicle about his sophomore outing. Go over and give the interview a look.

All will be revealed Friday...

On May 29th, What Will You Celebrate?

I've been getting some comments from a few people that have seen Pixar's new release "Up" and they couldn't be anymore positive...

From the reports I'm getting it sounds like Pete Docter has knocked this one out of the park. In what could be Pixar's most funny film there are a surprisingly large amount of deep and reflective scenes that you could classify as adult. And not in a naughty way, but a sophisticated, mature, poignant kind of way.

I've had more than one report of tearing up in certain scenes. And as usual, Pixar films are known for their wonderful secondary characters and this film is full of them. I can't wait to actually see this in theaters...

Pixar has released a new trailer for "Up" which floats into theaters in May. Watch this and tell me it's not funny, clever, engaging and totally Pixar.

I dare you...

Just What The Docter Ordered...

The rumors are true...

It appears that Pete Docter has settled on his next directing gig and the film project is a familiar one. While he likely won't be talking about it until his press junkets are through for "Up," the feature that he'll be working on(and has been for a while) is the sequel to "Monster's Inc." with tentative plans for it being Pixar's 2013 release.

You heard it here guys...

Up To Seeing Half Of Up Today?

If you happen to be in the Big Apple today and you're attending the New York Comic Con...

They're showing the first half(45 minutes) of "Up" in the IGN Theater this evening at 6:30pm. But if you go, I'd plan on arriving really early. I have a feeling it's going to fill up rather quickly.

Kind of like those balloons over Carl's house...

Up On Up...

Those guys over at CHUD were lucky enough to be at AICN's Butt-Numb-A-Thon and got to see about forty minutes of "Up" footage...

They came away very, very impressed. This is the second time I've seen someone who's seen this footage crow about it online. I've also received a good deal of e-mail from others that have commented about it as well. It seems the scene with Carl and his wife is the one that everyone comes away being touched by most. Pete Docter's next film, like all Pixar films is already gathering buzz. Very positive buzz.

Looking forward to this one...

He's been a busy man. Pixar has him making the rounds and being remarkably more open about this project far earlier than anyone expected.

I wonder...
