Hand Drawn Pixar Sequel...

Yes, you heard that right...

There will be a sequel of sorts to Pixar's animated treasure "Up" that will be hand drawn. Sort of...

It's called "George and AJ." And it actually is only about four minutes and five seconds long. And I believe if you buy the DVD you will find it over at Apple's iTunes as a commemorative of the release with the digital version of the film. Or you can just click HERE and watch it through the magic of YouTube.

Relax, it's Pixar. Enjoy...

Preview Special Mission...

When the DVD for Pixar's "Up" comes out there will be more than to film to make you want to own it...

One of the many bonus features will be the all new short "Dug's Special Mission" featuring my favorite character from the film. Over at Moviefone they've got a one minute preview of the short. Naturally it's hilarious and totally Pixar. Go over and take a look at what you didn't see in the film. I love how we're getting to see other parts of the film's story that didn't wind up being seen on the screen.

Double Feature...

Now here's a nice present the Lamp has announced today...

About "Up" and "Monsters Inc." on Blu-Ray.

November 10th is when the home video release of Pixar's "Up" will happen so get your bank accounts in order so that you'll be able to purchase it on that date. Along with that title, on the same day the Monsters' Inc. DVD/Blu-Ray will be coming out so expect a great double billing. The Up dics will come in several versions. A single-disc copy, a two-disc deluxe DVD and a four-disc Blu-Ray edition. Obviously the Blu-Ray will include all the bells and whistles (The Film, Partly Cloudy short, Dug's Special Mission short, Adventure Is Out There documentary, audio commentary, Alternate Endings collection: The Many Endings of Muntz, Cine-Explore/BonusView, Global Guardian Badge, Geography games, Eight documentaries, BD-Live and a digital copy).

The Monsters' Inc. disc is essentially the one that was put on the back burner and delayed a while back. Like the Blu-Ray of Up, the Blu-Ray of Monsters goes all out with no stops with a three disc collection. The Mouse more than any other entertainment company is really trying to get people to switch over to Blu-Ray.

Get 'em while they're here. Get 'em while they're hot/in stock...

Mea Culpa...

Looks like the critics of Pixar's "Up" have finally started to admit they were wrong...

The New York Times has a nice article by Brooks Barnes that talks to some of the people that originally doubted the Lamp could pull this off and they've finally started say they misjudged the film a bit.

But just a bit...

The Experts That Aren't...

All those Wall Street experts that were worrying about the potential of Pixar's latest film have been very quite lately...

As of today, the Lamp's tenth film, "Up" is officially the highest grossing film of 2009. And many of the same naysayers were wondering if kids would go and see this film about an old man, much less buy merchandise related to it.

I wonder how long Pixar will wait for an apology? I don't think Lasseter and crew are really even caring about what's being said. Other than by the film goers themselves. The critics liking the film was icing on the cake and the critics that were worried about the appeal of this film, well? They're toast, after having their lunch handed to them. Enough of the food metaphors, but you get the point.

Now, let's hope the critics did too...

UPDATE:
The only downside of this is that as of next week, the incomprehensible mass of action minus a story known as "Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen" will overtake it. Another feather in Michael Bay's "whoneedsaplot" cap.

"Up"setting The Balance...

There's some quite buzz going on in Tinseltown about Pete Docter's new film...

Some people are starting to talk about if and why "Up" should nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Or some say, at least Best Screenplay. So once again pressure will be put on the Academy to reward an animated film with the stature they normally only want to give live-action films. So if the momentum continues to grow it will be hard for those that hand out the little golden statuettes to actually do what it unthinkable. Give this charming film the respect it deserves. There has long been a bias against animated films, culminating with "Beauty and the Beast" becoming the first animated feature to be nominated for Best Picture. The stuffed shirts and tightened girdles inside this exclusive club couldn't take this and what culminated from all this was an award for Best Animated Film. For a group of people that consider themselves open and progressive, the Hollywood elite decided to create a segregated area for animated films since they're inferior to live-action. Imagine it as two water fountains, one labeled "live-action" and the other "animation" for drinking up movies. Separate but equal right? Riiiiiiggght. The reason there are two status groups for these type of films is because the Academy doesn't consider them equal and never really has. Remember how Walt wasn't even thought of as a competitor, which actually helped him slowly move into the live-action side. Every studio in Southern California thought that "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" would be a bomb. It turned out to be the most profitable film of that year. And when Disney moved into live action they felt he would succeed, because again, the perception of being an animator and not a real film maker. He must be crazy to make this "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" because it'll sink the studio. Animators and animation have been the brunt of this kind of thinking since the days of silent film. The movie business was wrong then and still is. Animation to them is a step down on the artistic ladder. The public, feels differently however. They vote with their wallets and animated films still tend to be some of the highest grossing of any films. Name me many films you can release on a new format seventy years later and still sell millions and millions of copies. Try that with most live-action titles and you'll be lucky to see hundreds of thousands, if not thousands.

So come the end of this year, well see if the weight of popularity and critical appeal will force the entertainment industry to acknowledge the obvious. Animation is worthy of being nominated for Best Picture. Pixar's "Up" is not only worthy of being nominated, it deserves to win as well.

Share the love...

The Plot Thinkens, Or Didn't...

The way a film comes together is interesting. The way a Pixar film comes together is fascinating...

When animated movies are made they start off in storyboard phase and then sometimes move to animatics (moving storyboards with temp dialog and music). At the Lamp this has been refined to an art based on the final result of their ten films. Lots of preliminary art is done, plot lines are worked, reworked and spit back out. Check out that piece of art by Lou Romano for an early version of Charles Muntz. He also produced an earlier version of the long lost explorer that Carl Fredricksen idolises, holding an egg that held within it the germ of an earlier version of the story.

MTV's Movie Blog has a nice article about that version of the film before it got streamlined. A version that held more layers inside this wonderful story. That's one of the many great things about Pixar: the fact that within the story you can find hidden pages that tell an even deeper tale.

But perhaps one that will never, fully be told...

NOTE:
Am I seeing things or does that earlier pic of Charles Muntz look like Walt Disney?

No Dog At The Box Office...

Pixar's "Up" made $21,400,000, on its Friday opening according to Box Office Mojo...

Wonder how those critics that felt the film would have limited appeal because the hero was a senior citizen and therefore, not very likable to the young kids that normally go see these films? Crickets, I hear crickets.

Nuff said...

A Perfect Ten...

Well, the Lamp has done it again...

Now, this really won't be a review of "Up" though I will share my thoughts and feelings about it. I want to address the success of Pixar in general and use Up as representation of that success since it's the latest example of what comes out of Emeryville.

As for Pete Doctor's new film, I can only say that it's another phenomenal achievement for John Lasseter and his crew. Pete Docter as one of the original Pixar animators goes for the outfield with his second at bat and he hits the sweet spot on the leather. Ok, for those of you that don't understand baseball metaphors let's just say I liked it. I liked it a lot. More than his first film, "Monsters Inc." even. As with all films produced under the Pixar banner, it's a film filled with great, approachable characters that you feel for in situations that make you wonder how they did it. These guys seem to take the strangest ideas that anyone else would turn into a flaming ball of mediocrity and create a jewel of entertainment. In fact, if George Lucas was going to make an adventure featuring an old explorer going to South America for adventure like he attempted to do with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," then this is what it should have been. There was more heart in this than that soulless, by the numbers stab at bringing back the magic of my favorite film character. Up is a film that shows us what you can do when you focus on story first.

But then again, that's what every Pixar film does. That is why they've been so successful over the last fourteen years. Ten films in that period and each of them a box office and critical success. Some more than others, but each and every one of them better than almost everything else out there, animated or live-action. I don't know of another studio with such a long, winning streak. Granted, they don't produce four or five or more films a year. They only make one a year (with 2011 being the exception that we get two), but each one has been a hit and many people are wondering what will be the first one to fail? When will we get a box office bomb from them? Or at the least, a disappointment. Well, I don't think 2010 with "Toy Story 3" will be it. And 2011 with the "Cars 2" sequel and the ever growing fan base of young boys it gathers will be it either. Maybe it'll be the Christmas release of "The Bear and the Bow" which will take the traditional Disney animated spot? Or 2012 with Gary Rydstrom's "Newt" film? Of those two I can't say, but if "Monsters Inc. 2" makes it in 2012, which is still tentative, I can guarantee that won't be that one.

Pixar is on a roll. Rolls end, but for now it's one great winning streak that you have to applaud. Succeeding in Hollywood is extremely difficult, succeeding as well as they have is almost next to impossible. Many are hoping that that magical pixie dust rubs off on its owner. Walt Disney Animation Studios took a step in the right direction last year with "Bolt" as Lasseter's first fully influenced film under his management. This year with "The Princess and the Frog" it moves out front and center to see if he's going to be able to not only continue, but expand his winning streak. And then "Rapunzel" next year and 2012's "King of the Elves" sweetens the gamble even more. It could impossible, but having ten films in a row like this could've been said to be impossible as well. At least before Pixar came around.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go plan for an adventure I've been putting off for quite some time...

Doctor Is Making The Rounds...

Pete Docter is out doing interviews for Pixar's "Up" and he's been a busy boy. He's chatted recently with the San Francisco Chronicle about his sophomore outing. Go over and give the interview a look.

All will be revealed Friday...

On May 29th, What Will You Celebrate?

I've been getting some comments from a few people that have seen Pixar's new release "Up" and they couldn't be anymore positive...

From the reports I'm getting it sounds like Pete Docter has knocked this one out of the park. In what could be Pixar's most funny film there are a surprisingly large amount of deep and reflective scenes that you could classify as adult. And not in a naughty way, but a sophisticated, mature, poignant kind of way.

I've had more than one report of tearing up in certain scenes. And as usual, Pixar films are known for their wonderful secondary characters and this film is full of them. I can't wait to actually see this in theaters...

Good News/Bad News = Princess/Toy...

Now I've got good news and bad news...

Well, it's really good news and delayed good news actually for this Friday the 13th. I've heard back from my Bothans about that "Toy Story 3" trailer I was wondering about.

Here's what seems to be the plan(again, things could change, but this is the plan).

First, there will be no Toy Story 3 trailer in May... yes, I know. A bit disappointing isn't it? But the good news is that there will be a trailer that comes with(but not attached) "Up" on May 29th. That's when the full trailer for "The Princess and the Frog" will debut. At least in theaters. The Mouse may put it up online before that, but the plan as of now it to put it in front of the Senior Citizen Action Adventure film.

See, the thinking right now is that the trailer for each new animated feature will be the trailer for for the next animated feature. WDAS and Pixar are both Disney now. Remember how the trailer for Up ran before Bolt last fall? So P and F will run before Up and should all go according to plan, when we see Disney's latest hand drawn animated feature during the holidays, you may see a trailer for Woody and Buzz.

Now that would be a really nice Christmas gift...

Partly Cool...

When I heard the premise for this new Pixar short: "Partly Cloudy" that would be appearing before Pixar Animation Studios' "Up" this summer, I wasn't that excited...

"Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating "dangerous" babies. Crocodiles, porcupines, rams and more -- Gus's beloved creations are works of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork partner, Peck. As Gus's creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck's job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend's fiery temperament?"

I mean, I have faith in Pixar because they're Pixar, of course! But that being said, I just thought how exciting is a cloud going to be? Or look? Well, even though it's very, Very, VERY rare... I was wrong. Once I saw the image above, I just went "Whoa, that's cool!" and had to mention it to you guys. My best wishes go out to Peter Sohn on his directorial debut with this short. He played my favorite character in "Ratatouille" and I'm rooting for him...

New Senior Citizen Action Adventure Trailer...

Y'know, the more I see of this film, the more I'm loving it...

Pixar has released a new trailer for "Up" which floats into theaters in May. Watch this and tell me it's not funny, clever, engaging and totally Pixar.

I dare you...

Up Art...

With "Up" moving ever closer to release it seems that artwork is leaking out...

Both officially and not. Over at Disney's Hollywood Studios you can catch a glimpse of some of the concept art that Pete Docter used when coming up with the characters and the story.

If this artwork has you salivating then may I suggest you pre-order "The Art of Up" because it's filled with these kinds of gorgeous images from cover to cover...

Up To Seeing Half Of Up Today?

If you happen to be in the Big Apple today and you're attending the New York Comic Con...

They're showing the first half(45 minutes) of "Up" in the IGN Theater this evening at 6:30pm. But if you go, I'd plan on arriving really early. I have a feeling it's going to fill up rather quickly.

Kind of like those balloons over Carl's house...
