All Things Disney...

The "All Things D" is an amazing place for dialing into what's relevant in geek techno...

They've had some extremely interesting, in depth discussions with people connected to the information age that is here, and the one just ahead.  If you want to see where things are going, for good or bad, then their talks are a must.  I've really enjoyed Walt Mossberg's interviews of Steve Jobs, and his talk with Bob Iger was subtly revealing as well.

Well, this year the Mouse came again in the form of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Tom Staggs.  One of a few people that are in line for the big job, Staggs is approachable, intelligent and focused in his back and forth with the hosts.  Take a look at the interview and see what he and the company have planned for the next few years in the parks and elsewhere.

If nothing else, watch Tom for a preview of who might be running the place in a couple of years...

Quiting Jobs...

One more thing...

It's hard to believe it was a year ago today...

On this date last year, Steve Jobs released a statement:

PRESS RELEASE: Letter from Steve Jobs

August 24, 2011-To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

It was sad to see him let go of the company he had such a part in creating, saving and turning into such a powerful force in the lives of so many people around the world.

And less than a couple months later he would be gone from that world...

Thought Different...

Stay hungry...

Today would have been the Walt Disney Company's Largest shareholder's birthday...

Steve Jobs would have been 57 today.

Who knows what else he'd have been working on that might have changed the world...

Mouse In The Apple Tree...

Frank Sinatra he ain't...

Now that Steve Jobs is gone, the Apple Board has no chairman and is down one member...

Until today. Apple CEO Tim Cook upped Arthur Levinson to Jobs' former title of Chairman and added Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger to the board. It's hard to imagine that he wasn't already there considering the closeness between the two companies. Disney has been one of the earliest supporters and adopters of the Fruit Company's products/devices/services.

Iger will sit on Apple's audit committee and provide a closer relationship between the entertainment and electronic giants...

Jobs Loss...

One More Thing...

A lot of people have lost jobs, but now a Jobs has quit his...

Steven P. Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple, Inc. as of today. This is like hearing something equivalent to Walt Disney resigning from Walt Disney Productions. It truly is the end of an era. Like when Walt passed away and the Disney Studios had to find there way without him, or Henry Ford no longer being at Ford Motor. It's one of those points in history that you can point to and say that you were there, or you remembered what you were doing at that time.

It won't likely mean anything for his involvement in the Walt Disney Company. They don't meet that often and he will likely stay on the Board of Directors, as his seven percent of the company still makes him an important contributor to business discussions. My warmest feelings and deepest regards go out to him, his family and the people who work there. He will now be the Chairman of the Board, but he won't be around One Infinite Loop on a continuing basis or regular schedule.

While his shadow will loom long and far over the company, his fingerprint will remain there forever...

One Ring To Rule Them All...

A perfect fruit...

The Mouse's biggest shareholder announced a new building for his company yesterday...

Steve Jobs, Apple's visionary leader has revealed his EPCOT (thanks to Alain over at Disney and More for the inspiration of that statement). The CEO presented his plans for the company's new headquarters in Cupertino to the city council.

Over the past decade, Apple has had a growth rate that is unheard of, and with it has come the need to find a place to house those employees. Scattered all around the city and its outskirts, numerous buildings hold some 13,ooo employees. Jobs wants them all working together, in the same space. This is the project that has been known for months as "Apple City."

So this unnamed building, in the form of a ring will house 12,000 employees. The Fruit Company will keep its 1 Infinite Loop headquarters that sits a mile down the road, but the majority of employees will reside in this massive, futuristic, spaceship-shaped building.

It'll be blasting off in 2012 and landing in 2015...

UPDATE: Several others have commented on the design and impact of this building that warrant another look.

The Planting Of The Tree...

Thirty-five years ago today, the seed that became Apple Inc. was born...

Started famously, in a small garage by two Steves, Wozniak and Jobs, it grew from a small business that turned a computer into something anyone could use, to a revolutionary computer named after an apple, to a fading niche player, to the phoenix-like rebirth with the return of Jobs. It's hard to believe that it's now the second most valued company in the world and that it's revenue will come close to IBM's this year, and possibly Hewlett-Parkard's next; moving toward being a $200 billion dollar a year company by the end of next year. Wow. A lot has happened since the time those programmers in Palo Alto showed Steve that little hobby they were working on called a GUI.

Disney's largest shareholder helped create a little fruit company with a very big shadow...

A Twenty-Five Year Old Lamp...

Twenty-five years ago today, Pixar was incorporated...

Although it would be a decade before it created the first computer animated film, the dream had already started. This was a formality to set business affairs in order. The company would go on developing its software, creating shorts and working toward the dream of creating the first computer animated film. The commercials were the way those in charge of this little computer software company justified all the money they made Steve Jobs put out. In the meantime, Jobs searched and searched for a way to make money on the software all the while Lasseter and his crew did their work and earned those Oscars. It would be close to half a decade more before Steve could be convinced of the road ahead that John and Ed wanted to travel.

A road that they've traveled to infinity and beyond...

Everything...

I've always wanted to attend this gathering and especially tonight...

Why tonight? Because this evening at the "All Things D" conference Steven Paul Jobs, Disney's Largest Shareholder, Master of the Universe, Apple CEO and ruler of all that is/are cool will be speaking there for the first time since 2007. If you've never seen an All Things D discussion and you're a tech geek then you're in for a very frank treat. I'm sure when it's all over quotes and some video will start to leak out providing plenty of ink for old and new media alike.

The 4th Keynote...

Apple, Inc. introduced the latest update to the iPhone today...

Version Four of the OS was put on display and will be available for the iPhone/iPod Touch by summer. The iPad will get the update in the fall. Looks rather swanky, can't wait to download it on to my own phone.

If you want to watch the Keynote then click here.

Summer? Hmmm... I guess it'll be out in time for that flashy, thinner, new version of the iPhone. I'm sure it'll be nice, but I'll hold off till next year to get one. Maybe. I think.

Next Gen Again...

Looks like Apple, Inc. has sent out invitations to an event to be held this Thursday, April 8th, at 10 in the morning...

The fourth generation of the iPhone OS software is expected to include some surprises and additions to the functionality of the device. After all, it's got to get all this ready for that new 4G iPhone that Steve will introduce in June/July. I want one of those swanky front loaded cameras! That way I can see my friends while arguing with them.

The future is just around the corner...

A Window Into The Future Of Pages...

Apple's iPad has only been on sale for a few days, but many have been wondering what it can do to rescue the print industry from the current digital dilemma it's now in...

Particularly the world of magazines. With subscriptions down and the trend expected to continue, many have seen the future in devices like the Kindle and now, the iPad. Steve Jobs believes this is the future of media and many believe him, but no one knows exactly what this new structure will look like. What would a future digital magazine or book look like?

Well, here's an example one magazine mocked up as to what/how to deliver a magazine to a 21st century audience. The results are quite interesting in the possibilities that can result from an embedded content and show how a subscription based media could work.

Take a look...

A Fifty Billion Dollar Fruit...

"If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it's surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company. The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about." - Steve Jobs

Wow, I thought that Steve Job's "Reality Distortion Field" only applied to those attending his speeches...

It appears the whole company now. The current state of a very depressed economy has had absolutely no effect on the Little Fruit Company. It's as if the world outside doesn't have any sway on Cupertino. Would that all business were immune to the disasters of modern economics.

If you don't know what I'm blathering about then you didn't see Apple's quarterly statement being released yesterday. To say that it was very good would be a great understatement. Maybe akin to saying that "Avatar" has made a profit.

Here's the skinny:

* Net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31 surged 50% from a year earlier to a record $3.4 billion, or $3.67 per share.

* Apple's sales rose 32% to a record $15.7 billion, easily sweeping past analysts' forecasts of $12.1 billion. The second straight quarter in which Apple posted record revenue.

* A 100% year-over-year rise in iPhone sales and a 33% increase in Mac sales. Apple sold a record 8.7 million iPhones in the quarter. That's up 17.6% from the 7.4 million it sold in the previous quarter and twice what it sold during the same quarter a year ago. Part of the sales increase was due to the release of the device in China last quarter.

* Despite the economic problems, Apple sold 3.4 million Macs in the quarter.

* Although the company lowered prices for many of its products last quarter, it still managed to grow gross margin to 40.9%, up from 37.9% a year ago. Apple beat Wall Street's consensus forecast by over five percentage points.

* The company anticipates earnings of about $2.06 to $2.18 per share in the current quarter on revenue of about $11 billion to $11.4 billion.

And then there is that little event being held at ten in the morning tomorrow. A new device will be introduced and expectation is high that it will be a tablet (iSlate, iPad, iTablet, iDon't Know). Word is that the device is being positioned for entertainment purposes more than a business. Media (print and electronic) and games are said to be a primary focus of the device and Jobs is said to be extremely happy with the results. Steve is a very demanding CEO so if he's happy, I really am curious as to what this device will be/do. What will it be? A competitor of the current tablets or something going after a PSP?

We'll know by this time tomorrow...

One More Thing...

Apple today e-mailed most of the media with a teaser confirming that event it was rumored to be having next week...

If you were one of the privileged few to have gotten an invite it would have looked exactly like what you see above you. Cause that's one of the invites. We'll find out exactly what Steve wants to dominate this year when he introduces it on January 27th. Remember that date.

Most of the press reporting on the iPod didn't think it would be that memorable and look at how the world has changed since then...

A New World Turns Three Today...

Three years ago today Steve Jobs brought phones into the 21st century...

Apple's game changing device was introduced on January 9, 2007 to the speculation of many, the skepticism of some and the applause of the faithful few.

Amazing how things have changed since then...

World Changes. Again...

Three weeks from today something will happen...

What, we don't know. But something (Insanely Great?). It appears that Apple, Inc. will have an event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; announcing some form of a new device (iTablet, iSlate, WonderSlate, Slabonator?) as well as some possible peeks at an iPhone 4.o interation. Speculation is brewing and geeks like myself and reporters are all wondering what it will be. And will Steve Jobs be the one that presents it? I hope so.

Counting the days...

A Vacation From Reality, A Haven From Chaos...

In these troubled economic times there are small pockets of calm that the reality of the outside world seems to not have any affect on...

I've mentioned how Apple, Inc. is one of these companies/businesses/lifestyles that is an example of this. Google is another. The Walt Disney Company, while not recession proof, happens to be weathering this storm remarkably good. The one area of the company that is a total part of this anomaly lies in Emeryville. In fact, every one of these companies are in northern California or the northwest. Maybe it's just the general area or the state of mind, or maybe it's just Steve Jobs and those that work for him or compete against him? But the Lamp is what I'm talking about.

Pixar.

That little company that seems to be showing everyone else how to run a successful business and to prosper. The economic swine flu that everyone else is suffering under happens to not infect that little plot of land in the bay area. Pixar is immune. While other companies seem to be cutting back, laying off or slowing expansion, John Lasseter and his crew are plowing forward. Success is a wonderful cure for a business.

Steve Jobs has been part of two business stories about that with the Fruit Company and the Lamp. I'm crossing my fingers that his magic touch goes on for a third time with Disney and this company will be able to ride the current and future crisis's as well. Hopefully Iger has his ear very close. We already know he's helped out on the redesigned Disney Stores/Imagination Parks idea. His former employee, John Lasseter is in charge of animation has been working to prop up the animation side of the company. Maybe a few more suggestions inside those Board meetings will be implemented and spread throughout the entire company? Who knows, maybe he'll convince Iger to let Lasseter build that swanky new pad for WDAS on the Lot? Or better yet, in JC's Glendale Kingdom?

But back up north... you wonder what it's like to work in a place of relative calm while the world around you falls apart. And right now, they're not only surviving, they're thriving. In fact, the company is bursting at the seams. At a time when most companies are looking at how to cut cost, Pixar is looking at how to grow. They simply have too many people that don't fit in the existing building. And many more are needed. That's why over the next decade they're going to be adding two new buildings that will expand and house their current and future workers. Unlike many other animation studios, the artist working on productions at Pixar know they've got a little job security for the next four or five years. There is that much work to do. The planning of projects is that far in advance.

Now, not everything is perfect in Emeryville. One thing that some people will complain about is the fact that Pixar pays its employees less than other companies (about 20-25% less). But many, not all, of the people that work there view this as a trade off for job security and an environment that is far more inclusive than most of the animated studios in the Los Angeles area. And they have lost several talented artist over the last couple of years (Lou Romano, we miss you!). But for every artist that leaves the place there are many more lined up to get a shot at working for the cream of the crop.

Sadly or sourly, depending on how you look at it, Pixar is now the pinnacle for everyone to work for. They are the man on the mountain that everyone wants to toss down. This used to be the spot that Walt Disney Animated Studios throughout the late 80's to the later 90's. This was a spot they held from the 30's all through the 60's alone. There really wasn't any credible competition then. It wasn't until the eighties that there was finally some form of a challenge to their near monopoly on animated features.

During the mid-nineties the Mouse made overtures to Pixar about creating a computer generated film and with it helped spawn a half dozen other studios that cropped up over the next three or four years. It's really hard to believe that before the Lamp, all these other studios didn't exist. And as they ascended, WDAS (Walt Disney Feature Animation) withered and slowly started to fade away. It took bringing in Pixar to revive the division. Kind of like Apple buying NeXT to save itself in a sense. And now we wait and see with the release of "The Princess and the Frog" if the Southern California branch of Pixar becomes part of this refuge.

Now, if only the rest of the economy would as well...

Master Of The Universe...

You will buy lots of iPhones, you will buy lots of iPhones!

Forget James Cameron being King of the World, Steve Jobs is the CEO of the Decade...

That according an article in today's Fortune Magazine. That's pretty cool for a guy that was tossed out on his cookies a decade earlier. Coming back in the late 90's all the critics thought he would be presiding over Apple's wake. He proved them wrong. The Apple of today is on rival with Google in market value and is actually worth more than Microsoft unbelievably.

There's a lot of pixie dust in that reality distortion field...
