On this day...
Eighty years ago, Walt Disney applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark to a new character he had created to replace Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, whom he lost in a shady business deal with his former distributor. He doesn't intend that to happen again with his new one, Mickey Mouse.
And the rest was history....

I hate to be a total dork, but here goes...
You don't apply to the Copyright Office for a trademark. You get copyrights from the US Copyright Office and trademarks from the US Patent and Trademark Office. They are two totally different things.
So which is it? Is this the day that Walt filed for a coyright or a trademark?

Well, whichever it is, I am grateful that Walt secured the rights to his Mouse early on. And maybe it was meant to be. Maybe Oswald would not have been as wildly successful under the Disney name as Mickey has been.
