The Past & Future Worlds Of Tron...

All Tron, all the time...

With each passing day there seems to be more TRON news, more billboards, more pictures released, more trailers (summer will be glorious!), and more interviews with fictional characters.

Henry Jenkins has done an interview with a real person. The creator of Tron himself, Steven Lisberger, the quasi-founder/Yoda of this cult. A very interesting dialog and revealing conversation that I highly recommend you take a look at.

With all this hype, let's cross our fingers that it lives up to the expectations and the box office lives up to the Suit's desires. If so, you ain't gonna believe what will follow at the Happiest Place on Earth a couple years later.

Dream on, programs...

Hat Tip to Ain't It Cool News.

I don't see this living up to the hype. The first TRON was fresh because computers on a home retail level was relatively new. You could go into a computer store & get the same game for at least 4 different computers (not to mention the consoles).

TRON, the sequel, might've had the chance if they had jumped on board the Internet bandwagon from 1995-1998 (maybe even 2000 depending on who you talk to) while it was still Web 1.0. However, the Internet has long since been tamed & everyone knows it's limitations. I'm not even sure if this new TRON film is about the Internet (I hear the action takes place in a server disconnected from it).

Add to this: The heavy PG-13 "Disney XD", "Please don't force us to buy another outside property so that we can attempt to attract young boys again" feel; The tired "Young cast meets the old cast" dynamic that has been all but telegraphed since the first teaser came out & the "CLU gone crazy" plot which really doesn't seem to stack up thematically to the MCP/Sark quasi-religious theme...

I don't know. I'm just not feeling it. TRON was fundamentally a happy film, an optimistic film. It previewed a landscape of hope & potential (they teleport a freakin' orange in the first film - An orange!). This new film seems to have that brooding, anime, "14-year old emo" feel to it that got old before 2000 rolled around.

I understand that times change, attitudes change & you have to appeal to the kiddies of today rather then the kiddies of 20+ years back but it's like turning a Star Wars movie into a murder mystery - You can script it but can you do it well enough for people to forget that the franchise really hits it's stride as a space opera instead? That's the question that'll be answered.

Personally, I'd merely be happy if they released the TRON 2.0 SDK instead but that's just me...

I can't wait for this movie. I remember the TRON tunnel at the Peoplemover in Disneyland when I was younger. If this movie comes back, it could mean the reutrn of the Peoplemover! Having my fingers crossed for this.
