The Lone Ranger Rides Again, Rides Again...

Ho hi, here we go again...

Well it appears that sanity has come to Burbank...

It this struggling economy, spending well north of a quarter of a billion dollars on a Western was enough to make the Mouse believe that it wasn't worth it. Thank you very much, "Cowboys & Aliens."

But the studio has come to an agreement with the producer, director and stars (what, no writers?) to take a 20% pay cut and defer some of the payments on the back end so as to get the film rolling. Also, any cost overruns will come out of Jerry Bruckheimer's pocket not Disneys. So it appears the production is back on track for shooting to start on February 6, 2012, with the film being released in the summer of the following year, May 31, 2013 to be exact.

Fear not, this is still a budget of over $215 million dollars, sans werewolves and a few other mystical things, but it still has three or four amazingly complex train robberies/crashes that should excite audience amidst the shoot outs. And don't worry about Johnny Depp not looking like an Indian, even though he is part Indian. You won't be able to recognize him if the make up test that they've done are approved. He's going to look like something you've never seen before. Of course, that has the studio a little worried, after all, if you're selling Johnny Depp and he doesn't even look like himself, will the audience not buy a ticket?

Come two years from now we'll likely know, but I like Gore Verbinski and I already know he can pull off a Western since he did "Rango" this year.

Now, let's hope he can turn silver bullets into box office gold...

From Pirate Gold To Silver Bullets...

Hi ho...

It seems that Jerry Bruckheimer is getting closer to finding a director for his "Lone Ranger" remake...

And it's a familiar face/name that is the likely candidate: Gore Verbinski.

The famed "Pirates" director is in talks to helm the story of the famous western hero. That would reteam him with Johnny Depp and put the picture on a track for filming sometime next year. Of course, with Depp's list of projects that really is very fluid. The man is more in demand than water is in a drought.

No official start date has been announced, but if Verbinski signs then you can bet that this project will move to the front burner for the Mouse and Jerry. The earliest you'd likely see it is the holidays, 2012. But that's just an estimation. Still no word on who will don the mask, but I'd guess people like Crowe, Clooney and McConaughey are on the short list. My choice?

No Return To Persia...

Well, with the box office now in it appears that not everything Disney is magical...

At least domestically. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came in a disappointing second place on it's opening weekend. If that wasn't bad enough, the number three film that almost beat it was about a group of aging, hormonally imbalanced, frisky New Yorkers and the number one film was an ugly green ogre made by a former cast member. Not quite what the Mouse had hoped.

Looks like Disney with that subtitle, "The Sands of Time" which was meant as an announcement of a possible franchise (read: replacement for POTC) is going to have to just be happy with just a single film. Unless Prince Dastan brings up a lot of Persian gold for the DVD/Blu-Ray release then it looks likely the sands of time have ran out for the dear, noble prince. Now as to what this means for Bruckheimer, not quite sure yet. After all, he survived "Pearl Harbor" didn't he? Let's just be thankful Michael Bay didn't direct this film. The Bruck is still Disney's golden boy and remember, he does have another Pirate tale to tell.

If there's to be another trip to Persia, then it's going to be up to the world (where the film was number 1 this weekend), not America...

Disney Sees The Light...

It's going to be interesting seeing how the opening of the Mouse's new film does this week...

Why you may ask? Well, it may have something to do with how fast this project gets going. But being as how the company paid such a high price for the script, and in this hostile market, it may have strong enough legs to get out of the gate despite any soft opening of Walt Disney Pictures' "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" box office. Now, don't read that I'm thinking it'll be a bomb or anything, I'm just saying that success, failure or disappointment will have some weight in how much breathing room Bruckheimer will have with pushing this film into production. Granted, it's Jerry and he has a great deal of wiggle room.

For those that want to know what I'm ranting about, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films have bought Terry Rossio and Bill Marsilii's epic space adventure script, "Lightspeed."

The Mouse and the Bruck put down $3.5 million bucks for said script. This is an astronomical amount, and the fragile state of the economy only multiplies the significance of this purchase. Rossio and Marsilii were responsible for the Touchstone Pictures film, "Deja Vu" that came out a couple years ago. Rossio, of course, is one half of the team responsible for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, the Disney classic, "Aladdin" and the upcoming western epic from the Mouse, "The Lone Ranger." Marsilii is also known for the early drafts of McG's "Captain Nemo" reboot/prequel that Ross canned late last year.

The plot of tale is about a young pilot who qualifies for something known as the Earth Interstellar Racing Team and then takes his star ship on a dangerous journey through a galaxy that is on the brink of war. The film will be live action and most likely in 3D. Sounds like Star Wars meets Speed Racer.

The Bruck...

A week from today there's going to an AFI series of screenings in Hollywood for one of Tinsel Town's most successful producers...

Jerry Bruckheimer, currently a member of the Mouse's stable of producers will have several of his films shown at the Mann Chinese 6 and the El Capitan.

Each film will be introduced by one of the stars of that particular film:

Armageddon introduced by Bruce Willis.
Beverly Hills Cop introduced by Eddie Murphy.
National Treasure introduced by Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, Justin Bartha and director Jon Turteltaub.
Pirates of the Caribbean: COTBP introduced by Orlando Bloom.
Top Gun introduced by Tom Skerritt and director Tony Scott.

I wonder if anything will be said about a certain film that goes into production days after this event happens...

More Magic...

Uh oh, it's magic...

Another trailer is out for Walt Disney Pictures adaptation of the fairy tale/film segment "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and it looks interesting...

I'll be the first to admit I was very sceptical when I heard about them making this, but after seeing these trailers I'm willing to hold my opinion until I've at least seen it. The trailers aren't what I expected and are at least intriguing to my open mind.

After all, Disney has made magic before and perhaps with this it will again...

Final Prince...

No, this isn't a post about Disney never making another royally themed film...

Fans of Princess movies can breath a temporary sigh of relief. The final poster for Walt Disney Pictures "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is out. Decidedly minimalistic. I look forward to seeing this when summer comes around.

Oh, and this is from the producers of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in case you didn't know...

Hat Tip to HGO.

Further Inside Persia...

A new short film is out from Walt Disney Pictures about the new "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" film...

This one focuses on Dastan somewhat more and gives you some behind the scenes looks at what the Mouse hopes will be its next franchise.

There's a reason for that subtitle, you know...

Apprentice Magically Appears...

The teaser trailer for Walt Disney Pictures "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" has gone online...

Interesting. It ain't the short from "Fantasia" of course, but I really wouldn't want it to be. I'll be interested in seeing more come about about this as its release approaches. Also, the official website has gone live as well, so see it here. Seeing Nick Cage in motion in the trailer doesn't look nearly as bad as those photos that we saw earlier in the year(the ones from Matrix 4). He ain't no Yen Sid.

But I really wouldn't want him to be...

Adaptaliens...

I think the Suits have been reading this blog...

Ok, ok, I'm just kidding. Don't think I've got a swelled ego and Bob Iger and John Lasseter value my opinions the way they do Steve Jobs. If they did then Jay Rasulo would have been gone a long time ago. And he wouldn't have just switched jobs. But those of you that read USAToday this morning would have seen an article with some neat little bits of info about a project I thought would have made a great live-action film for Walt Disney Pictures. And it looks like it may. May being the important word here. Remember that development of films in Hollywood moves at a glacial pace and just when you think something could get a greenlight it becomes banished to Development Hell. So, anything could happen.

If you remember reading my post: "Without Tights," I listed a series of titles that I thought the Mouse should go after and adapt in to a film since DC Comics was owned by Warner and Marvel was self financing. So I suggested several independent titles that would be great launching vehicles for Disney since it was comicless, so to speak. Well we all know what happened since then and with Disney buying Marvel I put away a "Without Tights Part Two" article that was about half way finished upon hearing this news. I mean, they've got at least five thousand characters to exploit and they don't really need to go shopping elsewhere, right?

Apparently there are still comics not owned by Marvel that they're willing to go after. Although Alien Legion was published by Marvel (through Epic Comics), it's still a creator owned title and would qualify as an independent comic book/graphic novel. But it along with several other titles I mentioned are already in active development. Many not at the Mouse and a few are languishing toward that horrible pit of fire all things written go to when Suits don't have the courage or intelligence to say "Go" to.

The article has some interesting observations, like the current writers, Derek Haas and Michael Brandt as well as the involvement of Jerry "The Bruck" Bruckheimer and the fact that it's for Disney: but nothing has been given a go. Hopefully that will change soon as this would be another great franchise for Iger and Ross to utilize over those various divisions of the Walt Disney Company.

Give it a read and maybe you will see Disney join the Legion and become a Foot Slogger in a couple years...

Princely Posts...

Now that the trailer for "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" has been released you can expect the publicity machine inside the company to start releasing more info as we move toward next summer's release...

Over at /Film they've got a set report that the site's Peter Sciretta did while visiting the production in England. He also has an interview with Dastan and the lovely Gemma Arterton as well.

Give it a look and be prepared for all things Persian...

International Prince...

Says Bruckheimer.

Let lightning strike twice!
Franchise!

Please bay, says Iger.

Just one day after the release of the American trailer for Walt Disney Pictures "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" comes the international trailer for the pic...

Whew, that was a mouthful! But seriously, take a look at it. While it contains all the chaos and action of yesterdays; it sets up a little more narrative and is a bit easier to follow for those not texting while playing a video game waiting for that Twitter message. Could next summer be an Arabian summer or a Pirates of the Arabia?

Time will tell...

Bruckheimer and Disney's Shatter Union...

No, that headline isn't implying that Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are severing their relationship...

Quite the opposite actually. The Bruck has been responsible for a good chunk of Disney's money over the past few years and there are all kinds of indications that that will continue for sometime into the future.

Bruckheimer has brought in J. Michael Straczynski to adapt a video game titled: "Shattered Union" for a theatrical film. The story is about the repercussions of what America looks like after a nuclear explosion destroys part of the east coast and the surviving states secede and form independent governments that battle for power and control over the continent. It sounds rather like Mad Max in America, to use a bit of high-concept speak.

We'll follow this to see how it progresses beyond a script, since directors and actors are going to help us determine where this project winds up. Will it be the silver screen or development hell? Only the line producer knows for sure.

Friends With The Cook...

There's a lot of reaction from people in Hollywood about Dick Cook suddenly stepping down from heading the Mouse's film division...

Key among these is Johnny Depp, who has developed a bond over the last half decade. It's not surprising, Cook's developed that kind of trust from many people in the industry. In front or behind the camera, Walt Disney Studios chairman was liked by all and many are still shocked as to what happened. Depp did a phone interview with the Los Angeles Times Friday about the events and his relationship with Cook:
"shocked and very sad, it seems like the whole town is shocked, I didn't see this coming. There was no reason to see this coming."

"the sweetest man on the planet and such a gent."

"He is the utmost gentleman, so he made the call himself. He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it,' He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason."

"He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust, he's a rare beast."
And his comment about his feelings for a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" film shows he's temporarily a little less enthused:
"There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment, it was all born in that office."
And he still believes that he'll work with/for Cook again, just not at Disney:
"He will be somewhere and I will always look forward to working with him. I consider Dick a friend inside an insane system. He's someone I understand and I think he understands me."
And he's not the only one, big producer Scott Rudin, whose production company has a first-look deal with Disney Studios:
"I'm completely shocked - as is literally everybody I've spoken to,"
According to Nikki Finke of Dateline Hollywood, Spielberg is supposedly devastated that Dick Cook's gone. Cook was a major reason why Spielberg and Stacey Snider decided to go with Disney on DreamWorks new distribution deal. "Steven worships Dick Cook," a DreamWorks insider told Finke.

He was instrumental in working out this new deal with Guillermo del Toro and his new label at Disney. He seems to know what the company is lacking and has tried to attract talent that seems to have their finger on the pulse of what audiences like.

Cook also is supposedly on very friendly terms with Lasseter ever since the Pixar deal went through, I wonder what John thinks of all this? Having Cook by his side was a very reassuring thing for Lasseter and Ed Catmull. How will the new leader deal with Lasseter? Granted, John Lasseter is a big fish, and he pretty much gets his way, but it helps having those around you that you know you can trust. Cook was one of those guys, but we don't know if the next guy/gal will be.

You can see these people have a great deal of loyalty to Dick Cook, as do so many countless others. Relationships in Hollywood, true relationships, not the plastic kind, are hard to come by. Walt Disney Studios had something going for it with a leader that was so trusted. It'll be a very difficult challenge for Iger to find someone with the cache of credibility Cook had.

Here's crossing our fingers and wishing for the best for both Disney and Cook...

The Long Ranger Rides Again And Again...

Hi Ho, Silver...

And Away...
Seems those guys over at Latino Review have gotten their hands on the "Lone Ranger" script...

Seems like El Guapo's pals have read the first draft of Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott's more serious version of the masked man. And they apparently think it's really good. Really. Go over and take a look at their video review.

Of course, we have to wait until 2012 to see a return to those thrilling days of yesteryear...

Bruckheimer Buys Shake...

The Hollywood Reporter is uhm, reporting that Jerry Bruckheimer has bought the noir-fiction story "Shake" from screenwriter Derek Haas for a future film through his deal with Disney (Touchstone, most likely).

Haas will write the screenplay, expanding it from the short story on Popcorn Fiction to a feature film. Bruckheimer, obviously will produce through his production shingle on the lot. The tale involves an FBI agent hunting down a killer as he slowly begins to lose the motor functions of his own body to a debilitating disease.

In related news, Bruckheimer has hired a writer to pen the script for an eventual "Bad Boys 3," which would reunite "The Bruck" with Michael Bay, Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and crew. What a minute! Did they actually had writers on those first two films? Now that's a revelation to me. My opinion was that Bay would yell: "Action" and everything goes "BOOM!" and then he'd yell: "Cut!" at which point the credits would roll. Story? We don't need no stinkin' story!

Disney Buys War...

As in with robots...

According to Variety, Walt Disney Pictures based Jerry Bruckheimer has aquired the film rights to Ashley Wood's graphic novel "World War Robot" from IDW Publishing. The story focuses on a small band of humans that battle robots in a world where humanity's fate lies in the balance. Yep, sounds like something that would have Bruckheimer's name on it.

Who's that knocking? Michael Bay? Don't you already have your own robot film, Michael? Get outta here! McG? No, he screwed up his robot war movie. Thanks, we'll pass. The deal was sealed during Comic-Con last week. That place is becoming like the Cannes Film Festival for Geeks with all the film showings and deal making.

Geeks rule...

The Empire Has More From Persia...

Over at Empire Magazine they have some exclusive pics from the set of Walt Disney Pictures "Prince of Persia" for all to see...

Go over and take a look at hunky Jake Gyllenhaal, who looks like he's walked out of the sequel to "300" with that new buff look of his. I want to see a trailer for this film to get the tone. The Mouse is certainly planning on this new Bruckheimer production to be its next trilogy.

Next summer, we'll see...

We're Here To Kick Dat Little Wizard's Butt...

Whoa...

I don't believe it, but "G-Force" beat "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" on Friday night. Now that is something I thought I'd never say or see. I figured the family film would do nicely with the "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" crowd, but I never thought it would beat the Trio of Hogwarts. While it's not my cup of tea, this shows that there is a family audience out there that is hungry to be entertained.

I didn't know they were this hungry...
