From Pirate Gold To Silver Bullets...

Hi ho...

It seems that Jerry Bruckheimer is getting closer to finding a director for his "Lone Ranger" remake...

And it's a familiar face/name that is the likely candidate: Gore Verbinski.

The famed "Pirates" director is in talks to helm the story of the famous western hero. That would reteam him with Johnny Depp and put the picture on a track for filming sometime next year. Of course, with Depp's list of projects that really is very fluid. The man is more in demand than water is in a drought.

No official start date has been announced, but if Verbinski signs then you can bet that this project will move to the front burner for the Mouse and Jerry. The earliest you'd likely see it is the holidays, 2012. But that's just an estimation. Still no word on who will don the mask, but I'd guess people like Crowe, Clooney and McConaughey are on the short list. My choice?

Jon Hamm...

Because Hollywood and Suckheimer can't come up with a new original idea if it bit them on the ass they have to pillage the classics. This has fail written all over it.

Jon Hamm as the Lone Ranger? Honor, that's one of the most inspired things you've said on this site.

Ihad never heard of Jon Hamm before but after looking at his pictures, I can see him in the outfit!

"This has fail written all over it."

Yeah, and making a movie out of a theme park ride like Pirates is gonna bomb too.

Oh wait.

Nevermind.

YES! Is what I immediately thought after hearing about this! What great movie news to hear, one of my favorite directors of one of my favorite film trilogies doing a western like this. I absolutely love westerns, so this is quite good news for me, plus Johnny as Tonto would be hilarious.

Tonto-

Disney has been trying to develop this project for a few years now. But think about it, the Lone Ranger is the kind of wholesome, old-fashioned icon that is a perfect fit for Disney. Obviously, "old-fashioned" is also the challenge.

If they can come up with a fun, contemporary spin on the Western in the same way that they did for pirates, this could be great. Think along the lines of the Zorro remakes that were done a while back. And just imagine what it could do for Frontierland, I bet WDI would love to put the Lone Ranger into the parks.

Clooney's too old for the Ranger. And too stupid.

Jon Hamm? Hmmm..not bad...

Brilliant. Take Johnny Depp and turn a drunken pirate into a drunken Tonto. Now that just screams racism towards Native Americans. If you are going to cast Tonto cast a full-blooded Native American actor in the role who will take it seriously, not someone who will make the character into a drunken farce. This could be Disney's next Song Of The South.

I may be alone on this, but I'm not a fan of Jon Hamm, in my opinion he was the weakest link in The Town.

Maybe Robert Downey Jr. could clear up his schedule and give it ago.

Drunken Indian?

I take it you've read the script? I'd guess not. I don't think Disney would be stupid enough to be racially insensitive. That said, I don't wish them to be politically correct as well.

Let's wait until we actually see the film before judging it. I seem to remember a lot of people saying a movie based on a pirate ride would bomb.

Depends who you ask. I thought the Pirates movies were crap but they made a lot of money so I guess people buy that crap.

I have to agree with the anonymous above, I too thought the Pirates movies were VERY lame. So I'm cautiously optimistic about the Lone Ranger. As long as they don't turn it into a farce like Pirates, it could be good, but with Johnny Depp attached, I won't hold my breath.

Wonder if this'll happen after the upcoming FIASCO "rango," the hideously ugly cartoon they're making together. The response so far from the studio is extremely tepid (although they respect Depp and the director). And with that awful owl movie flopping this weekend, I expect they'll dump and run on the project.

We need Josh Holloway as the Lone Ranger!

The combo of him and Johnny Depp would be so awesome- great actors with great comedic instincts. This would be instant win!

This will go over like Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex.
