World Changes. Again...

Three weeks from today something will happen...

What, we don't know. But something (Insanely Great?). It appears that Apple, Inc. will have an event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; announcing some form of a new device (iTablet, iSlate, WonderSlate, Slabonator?) as well as some possible peeks at an iPhone 4.o interation. Speculation is brewing and geeks like myself and reporters are all wondering what it will be. And will Steve Jobs be the one that presents it? I hope so.

Counting the days...

Well, I'll be having to hang with Ma Bell for quite a while with my iPhone, so it wouldn't matter much to me...

At least till 2011.

Maybe the Wonderphone will be able to do time travel by then...

Someday, the FCC needs to break up the whole provider system and free everyone from locked phones and excessive data charges.

The day that subsidized phones are no longer offered is the day that the customer only has the option to buy an iPhone for 5, 6 or 700 dollars. Agreeing to a two year contract is what brings the price down to 2 or 300 bucks.

I've been following live coverage from CES in Las Vegas on live.twit.tv and elsewhere, and I just gotta say... so far, there isn't anything there that I'm interested in. What I'm most eager for - and what I suspect the majority of the tech world is waiting for - is to see what Apple finally introduces on the 27th of this month. Everything else is just pre-show as far as I'm concerned.

If you are fanboi of Apple, they can do no wrong and you will get out your wallet. If you are objectional and not in the "disposable income" bracket, you realize that Apple makes good products but know that there are plenty of others that can do the same thing for a lot less.

Sorry, but the iSlate or whatever is laughable. $1000 (supposedly) for a tablet?? No keyboard?? Are you kidding me? In all seriousness, what purpose does it serve?

I'm a VP in systems for 20+ years. I just don't see what niche this is going to be in. I have a netbook...becuase its cheap and almost disposable. Its good for email and facebook...that's about it.

I have a laptop becuase I need a full function machine for everyday use from SQL to systems management. Where does the tablet fit in? For email?? Where's the keyboard?

I'm sure becuase its Apple, it will be a well designed high quality product. But who is buying this thing? Blue collar families that need a PC for their kid to do his homework? Or listen to their iTunes? I seriously doubt it. Someone in business who needs to take notes at a meeting? For $1000? I doubt that, either.

Its almost like Apple has a solution for a question that wasn't answered. An overgrown iPhone...but with no phone is probably the best way to describe it.

But it won't matter. Apple only points at one market segment: the disposable income bracket. People who have money and don't necessarily weigh the decision of buying a $1000 iTablet versus getting braces for Junior.

Flame if you want to, but its the truth. When you get into your late 30's, have a couple of kids, and worry about the economy; then let's see if you are a big fan of Apple ;)
