Michael Keaton is joining the cast of "Toy Story 3" as Barbie's main male squeeze: Ken. Barbie herself will be played again by Jodi Benson(Ariel's voice in TLM). IESB is reporting this interesting casting news...

Well, cool for Ken. I like Michael Keaton, but really don't care that Ken has made it in, but since it's Pixar, I'm sure it will be good. The two best things about Toy Story 2 were the Buzz Lightyear sequence at the beginning, and the rich history they gave Woody and his Roundup Gang. All the toys and whatnot? Awesome. Completely great.
I hope they do some of that this time--either more "real" Buzz Lightyear sequences, or more context for the history of Woody, or something in that vein. It was the expansion of, and the detailed rendering of that expansion, the world Buzz and Woody occupied that really sold me on Toy Story 2. However, whatever they end up doing, I know I'm going to go see it. They've got me, no matter what.
One other thing I'd love--and I'm not a Cars fantatic, by any stretch--is a cameo by some of the Cars as toys. A Lightning McQueen toy car? Why the heck not?
I also would love to see a Mickey Mouse, or other classic Disney character rendered as toy, or even a competing toy line (licensing would probably be prohibitive), such as a Superman action figure or a Bugs Bunny. More reminiscent of my you.
I was lucky/unlucky enough to have worked at Disney's "Circle Seven Animation Studio", while they were doing Toy Story 3. I'm quite familiar with the entire project...from script to "story reels".
( BTW, many would be surprised to learn this was not some"cheapquel"...quite the contrary...this production had some of the best talent in the biz. We had MANY former Pixar story artists/animators, etc., who had worked on Toy Story and/or Toy Story 2. There was a tremendous respect for the originals).
Now, when reading about Ken as a new character, it reminds me of some very funny scenes we had with Ken and Barbie in our version of Toy Story 3. So, obviously, I think Ken is a great addition to the film...and you can't go wrong with Keaton.
By the way, there was an amazing near shooting draft of Monsters Inc. 2! It was developed to be next in line at the studio after TS3. I've read parts of it and it's unbelievable. No word on what Pixar's plans are for the script, though.
I'm Batman.
