Mouse Competing In Olympics...

Bidding that is...

ESPN is likely to bid for the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games over the course of the process that will end in October of 2009. The Mouse could have stiff competition though, as NBC, Fox and CBS are thinking of going for the gold themselves...

Developing.

Although NBC has done an excellent job with the Olympic broadcast righs thus far, but if there's any network that should host the olympics its ABC/ESPN....

It'd be appropriate, and they could take advantage of all the ESPN networks to broadcast various events versus NBC that only shows some events on few networks, some networks that dont even have anything to do with sports.

The Olympics on ABC was the best. With the late great Jim McKay hosting the procession throughout the day, his excellent broadcasting skills coupled with the way he could tell a story will never be matched again no matter which network gets the games. It was awesome a couple of years ago, when NBC hired McKay to do some features throughout the games. It took us back if only for a moment. Too bad he wasn't around to see this year's events, especially Michael Phelps and the men's swim team.

NBC paid a lot for the Olympics up to 2014. While this year has been good for them, mostly because of Michael Phelps, and 2010 in Vancouver will also be great because everything will be live, but will London in 2012 and especially Sochi, Russia, in 2014 give them big numbers? It's a big gamble for any network, but NBC has done very well.

NBCUniversal and Disney both have enormous assets in terms of television channels, especially over their rivals, but I have enjoyed NBC's coverage and cringe to think what an ESPN Olympics broadcast might be like (Chris Berman all the time???)

If Chicago gets the 2016 games, then watch the bidding go sky high. Whoever wants to pay the billions will get it, but can they make it worth it?
