I have to install Quicktime to view these?? Meh.
You DON'T have Quicktime? What do you watch with? That crappy WMP?
Yuuuuuuck.
I have to read anonymous' comment?
Meh,
is this going to theaters? americans are not going to go see a movie like this. by releasing this movie it could further hurt the disney brand for when it is time to release their own animated movies.
No, it's not going to hurt the brand. And it's one of many film by Hayao Miyazaki that Disney has released. It hasn't hurt the brand when all the others were released. They've been supervised and approved by Lasseter himself. Disney has been releasing these films in limited release for a decade and it won't harm them, it will mainly appeal to animation buffs and fans of this particular genre.
You really don't know anything about Miyazaki, do you? If it wasn't for him, Pixar wouldn't be what it is. He's HUGELY influential on their work. Perhaps you should see Spirited Away or one of his other works before ragging it.
^^Anonymous what are you talking about? Where have you been? Disney has been releasing Studio Ghibli films since dubbing Kiki's Delivery Service in 1997. Disney has done a great job promoting and showing Americans a diverse look in storytelling from the world-renown Japanese studio. Americans have seen this type of movie in the past and I have no doubt they will continue in the future. I think it is important for the company to embrace other modes of animation other than their own.
"by releasing this movie it could further hurt the disney brand for when it is time to release their own animated movies."
Disney has done enough damage to its animation brand. They are currently in the process of rebuilding it. If they made more movies as good as Ghibli does, they'd recover much more quickly.
Disney has made more influential and better animated films than any other animation company out together. Whoever said Ghibli makes better films knows nothing about animation. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs practically invented animation quality for life. No one has ever made an animated film with that quality before, the Citizen Kane of animated films along with Fantasia. Ghibli hasn't made many pictures, DIsney has made the best quality animated films, everyone else is just trying to copy them in some poor attempt.
I just dont see the american audience going out to see a movie with this look and feel. Asian animation has a totally different look. To me I would even say it looks cheap.
What's the better animated film and which looks better, Spirited Away or Nightmare Before Christmas? Nightmare Before Christmas is a work of sheer genius from Henry Selick, the genius behind stop motion films as "Nightmare," "James and the Giant Peach," and "Coraline." Anime is rather drawl animation compared to stop motion or 2D films such as Snow White, in fact, Disney came before Miyazaki, so who does the better animated film? Disney does.
So, who came first? Rembrandt? Picasso? Monet? Matisse? Renior? Van Gogh?
Which one defines great art? Which does the "best" art? Animation, like art, comes in all styles and flavors and people appreciate different styles for different reasons. But there is no way to state that any one artist or style is superior than another without limiting the criteria of the subject or style.
Yeah. What he said.
Grow up people. It's not a competition. Studio Ghibli makes very enjoyable films. A new Miyazaki feature is reason to celebrate. I've seen Ponyo, it's very good.
Comparing the great Disney films to Miyazaki's work is retarded, but few will deny the recent downfall of Disney animation.
One poster had said that Disney was making a mistake in releasing this film because it would hurt the Disney brand when in fact Disney decimated its own brand by suspending 2D animated films in the first place, only now rectifying that regretful mistake.
Ghibli was the only 2D animation Disney was releasing for a while.
It's sad to think people love Disney and their animation so much, they fail to see what great things other studios around the world create.
Oh well, it's Kevin's loss if he can't admit Ghibli movies are awesome. The only people who ever tried to copy Walt were those who worked post-Walt's death in the Disney Studios. After The Jungle Book, Disney declined.
One more thing, Ghibli has not been around for decades like disney has, so just because Disney released more movies does not mean it is better than a studio who has released fewer films.
