The Sun Sets On The Wheel...

Today is the last chance you're going to have to ride DCA's Sun Wheel...

It goes down tomorrow and in April when it reopens, "Mickey's Fun Wheel" will rise from its ashes.

Let it begin...

"Mickey's Fun Wheel" is the new name..hmm. I am not sure but my thoughts are that it may not be the best choice as the sun wheel was more known for the "special" smoking going on inside by the teenagers. On second thought Fun Wheel might just be perfect...lol RWR

Let it begin... - is that ti be a new catchphrase..

Anyway. It's nice to know that this is happening. Hearing that it is going down to be refurbished is quite reassuring. Particularly as it is to be such a long road. Thanks for mentioning that. I feel so detached from that side of the world, being back home in the UK, but I still like to get my bits and pieces to catch me up on the progress. I hope to visit California sometime in a couple of years.

I'm not sad to see the sun face go but I really would have rather they scrapped the Ferris Wheel all together and come up with something else. A loading dock for a motorboat cruise type ride would have been kind of cool for the kiddies since they're going to get rid of the kid stuff where the beer garden is going. That's just me though (I have a prejudice against Ferris Wheels in general).

I hate the idea of having mickey's face on it. I think it might look too haufy and childish now.

I would use "Let it begin..." when construction begins on The Little Mermaid attraction, the new entrance plaza, and the Cars attraction, not "Mickey's Fun Wheel".

They are replacing the sun with a big Mickey face. Who cares?

Those other projects aren't the beginning, Spokker...

They're the middle.

Really exciting

Any concept art? I picture something similar to the opening card on a Mickey Mouse short.

Mickey's Fun Wheel is the beginning of nothing. Let us know when they bring in the wrecking balls. Now there's a start.

I'm not sure this transformation is necessary. It seems the money could be put to better use else where.

Spokker they arn't just replacing the face. They are doing a complete update on the whole ride. New Queue, New LED Lighting covering the whole wheel, it is being entirely repainted. Haven't you been following? It's a start, and it will be better than what's there before, so I am not going to complain.

My hope is they keep some version of the bright, dancing lights. We typically stay in the Grand Californian Hotel, which gives a great view of the "wheel". At night, it's brilliant. I'd be interested in seeing the new design as well.

Thanks for the update, Honor.

Cheers, Bob

Are they keeping the sliding baskets? I hate those things, they make me sick.

honor, i read on another disney fan site that Radiator Springs Racers is going to be so huge that some of the canyon cliffs can be or will be bigger than the matterhorn, is there any truth to this?

From what I've heard, Mickey's Fun Wheel will also play a role in the nighttime Wonderful World of Color show, so its not just changing for the sake of changing.

Some concept art of the pier and Fun Wheel can be found here:

Justin, it looks like they're keeping the sliding baskets, haha. But you can always ride the motionless ones

Thanks, John SIlver, for the link to the art. The wheel looks as I imagined. It also looks like the sun makes its way to the loop of the coaster so as not to over do the mouse motif.
