I Wanna See This Even More...

The trailer for Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" is out...

Wow. What a thing of beauty. Those images placed to Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" just blend so well. I can't wait to see this in August.

I wish Disney would do a family film like this. That would be a bold and exciting move, which I don't think you'll see anything like anytime soon.

But I'd love to be proven wrong...

That looked like a really good movie. I can't wait to see it!

See? Very nice isn't it? It looks warm and fuzzy, and adventurous, and sad, and happy.
Doesn't look like a committee job at all.

It'll be competing for attention with Toy Story 1 in 3d and Astro Boy. No Romantic Vampires around then though, so it may do alright.

I got to work, briefly, with Mr. Sendak on the production of Hansel and Gretel that was co-produced by the Juilliard School (when I was working at Juilliard). What a wonderful man.

The trailer looks great, so here's to the film being great as well.

Am i the only one not enthralled with teh trailer. Sure it looks visually stunning, but it is shot after shot of people running. I wanted to here the Chariots of Fire theme.

The trailer left me a little colder than the stills did. The stills look like the book in 3D, with lots of that muted Sendak color and crosshatch texture. The trailer, while showing what could be some emotional parts, also shows how ordinary some of the shots look, specifically the setting. It doesn't seem to take place in a Maurice Sendak forest, just a regular forest, and other real world locations. I'm glad they didn't get someone like Tim Burton to direct, as I've heard someone suggest, as his style would have overpowered Sendak's, but as many things as it looks like they got right, I wonder if they didn't go quite far enough with the art direction. Also hoping that the "Wild Things" themselves don't come off too much like Sweetums from the muppets. A little CGI augmentation to blur the lines and make the costumes look less "costumey" would be a nice touch. But I'm still more excited about this movie than anything that's come out for a long long while.

Meh.

I love the realistic look and feel of the film, but the tone looks too "emo" for me.

Apparently the film will explore what's going wrong at home that makes Max want to leave.

Sounds like lots of fun?

It's going to be interesting how this movie turns out, the book was one of my favorites during childhood. Being that this movie had some production problems in which they had to hold the premiere back a year, I'm a little bit concerned on the final product.

Would be? You may want to watch the trailer again.

Thanks Digital Jedi, I thought I did spy some CGI facial augmentation, but couldn't quite be sure in the tiny window on my computer screen. Still, while I am not a "CGI solves everything" person, it's too the point where I believe that good CGI is the better option than clunky costumes nowadays, and a lot of those shots were still clunky costumes.

Oh come on. That looked awful. Giant furry Muppet costumes, which looked unconvincing, even embarrassing, whenever the guy in the suit started moving around. This looks like retro-H.R. Pufnstuf crap. I bet older kids would scoff at this. As for me, I grew up with the book, but from what I've seen in this trailer I'll be spending my movie money elsewhere.

It's basically a childrens' arthouse film. And I mean that in the best possible way.

Awesome. I was a big fan of Sendak's books growing up from Where the Wild Things Are and The Night Kitchen to Seven Little Monsters, Outside Over There, and of course Little Bear. During high school I became a big fan of Spike Jonze. So to me this is a match made in heaven. However, Honor, you made me wonder. You said you can't wait until August, yet the film isn't being released until October. Are seeing it early at a festival or something or was that just an honest slipup?

Except this is based on a book where the characters looked like big furry Muppet costumes. And kids still watch Sesame Street with as much zeal.

Yes, and it's also being made by a genius. ;)

Seriosuly, though, it's just being faithful to the material and since when is that a bad thing?
