DC's Big Bang Theory...

With the Bunny's Superman reboot coming out soon you have to imagine what is in the future...

I mean, we know that a Batman reboot is coming, and the possible team film of Justice League, but what else beyond that will fill out, for lack of a better term: DC Cinematic Universe - Phases One.  Because DC Comics, unlike Marvel, happens to have all their characters under one roof.  This gives them an advantage I hope they don't squander.  We already have the Alien, in a few years the Vigilante, but what about the Speedster, the Amazon, the Archer, the Atlantian or the Martian?  Not to mention the Robot, the Little Guy, or Galactic Guardian.  Who will be next?

My thoughts are that "The Flash" should go next.  If fact, I believe that he would have made a much better jumping off point than the "Green Lantern" film that stumbled across the box office.  The thing they got right in that film is putting in Ryan Reynolds.  Of course, he should have been playing Barry Allen/Wally West as the Scarlet peedster.  Maybe he still can play it if he doesn't go ahead with Deadpool.  It's been done before with Chris Evans moving from Johnny Storm in the incredibly uninteresting "Fantastic Four" to the wonderfully entertaining "Captain America" hasn't it?  But even if he isn't the star, that's the character that should be after Supes and Bats.

Then who?  Which is next?  I know that she's an incredibly hard character to crack, but Wonder Woman would be an interesting turn.  Joss Whedon had trouble with his turn at the page, but someone should be able to take a mythological heroine of Greek mythology and turn in a captivating tale.  If Steve Rogers can have a film set in World War 2, why can't Princess Diana be set around the time of "300" for timeline sake?  Get Louis Leterrier work some frenetic magic with Amazons battling creatures of myth and give it a feminist twist.  Just throwing out ideas here.

But before Warner Bros. goes ahead with a team film, perhaps they should have a game plan for two or three other heroes that don't live in Gotham or Metropolis.  They could even play on the joke that was almost the setup for "Entourage" and ask James Cameron to do Aquaman.  I'm serious.  That would be a major shake up.  And don't tell me that an announcement like that wouldn't make people's ears perk up.  The Atom would be interesting, but I'd save him for a Phase Two, like Ant-Man in Marvel's Phase Three.

The Green Arrow could get his own film based on the excitement generated by the successful CW show.  But it could also cut against it in diluting the brand.  Perhaps it's better to let that show run its course for a few years and plan on bringing Oliver Queen along in a second batch of films.  And how about a bold move, along the lines of Marvel doing "Guardians of the Galaxy" and have a film with J'on J'onzz?  That might show the Bunny Suits have a little gusto in their branding engine.

It doesn't have to go from zero to sixty with "Man of Steel" to "Justice League" really now...

Wait, wait, wait...they're rebooting Batman...again? Why??? There are SO many stories to tell, why do the studios insist on retelling origin stories over and over? We've seen it with Superman now, and Spiderman, and Batman...it's getting really old.

Yes, but you just know that's what the suites are aiming for.

New generation or not, there has just been too much super-hero being foisted on the public. It's gotten to the point where I'm ignoring new releases.

Spiderman? Batman? Superman? Which one? What story? many are just retelling the same old stories with new actors and new directors.

I look forward to NEW concepts and stories, NOT based on old franchises.

There sure has been a lot of Warner stories on your mostly Disney site. Is something going on between the two companies that we don't know about?

If you follow Blue Sky alot you know that Honor is a DC guy, not a Marvel guy. And the site always has had stuff he finds interesting, even if it has nothing to do with Walt or his company.

The Warner Bros. stories do have a lot to do with it, though. Since that company is Disney's biggest rival, it's appropriate that he mentions the competition.

I have to admit that I'm hoping the phenomenal success of the Marvel movies does spurn on some effort at making good DC movies...

We can always hope that they go for good films rather than shoving something at us with the idea of 'it's a superhero - it'll make money!'.

DC will only achieve success with its universe if it treats its characters with respect and doesn't try to give them the Superman III or Batman & Robin treatment. The reason why the recent Batman triology sold was because DC made the audience believe that such a character could exist without all the clownish antics that have accompanied past productions. Humor is fine as long as it is not the object of a long action sequence (Superman III) Treat the characters with the dignity they desire.
